In Helldivers 2, the game’s community is expected to liberate as many planets as possible for Super Earth. This means taking down any and every entity that stands to oppose it, mainly the Terminids and Automatons. Players actively participate in missions in Helldivers 2 as a group or solo, to achieve what Super Earth has set them out to do while being awarded for their efforts. Defense campaigns, in particular, usually promise great rewards due to how challenging they can be. However, there is an argument to be made about whether they should always be available or remain occasional events.
Liberating a planet in Helldivers 2 is what players do daily, but every planet is at perpetual risk of being reclaimed by the enemy. The higher-ups issue a defense campaign, notifying the community to decimate the invaders to prevent them from achieving their goal of conquest. Such defense missions do not happen frequently, but maybe one day they could constantly appear as normal missions. While Arrowhead Game Studios could allow it to happen, such a decision has both positives and a few drawbacks that must be considered.

The Case for Defense Missions Being Always Available in Helldivers 2
Helldivers 2 may be sitting on a potential gold mine with defense missions, as they’ve shown to attract attention and have players actively participate in them. Arrowhead Game Studios could allow campaigns involving the prevention of enemy planetary conquest to be available at all times for a variety of benefits:
- Having a defense campaign always available means there is more mission variety, giving players more to enjoy and take on in the fight for galactic freedom
- There will always be a sense of urgency in the game, as players will likely not want any planet to be taken over by the bots or bugs, which encourages consistent participation from the community
- It creates more opportunities for Arrowhead Game Studios to provide rewards that will get people to continue playing, such as new items in the Helldivers 2 Superstore for free cosmetics only attainable through defense campaigns
- More opportunities to introduce new objectives which can help make defense missions something to look forward to
Missions that involve defending a planet may be difficult, but they are also some of the more exciting ones. Helldivers 2 could benefit from having them always available for players to participate in, and they have the potential to help the game grow into more than what it already is.
The Argument for Keeping Helldiver’s 2 Defense Campaigns as Infrequent Events
Although Helldivers 2 defense missions could be great as permanent features, there are a few reasons why they shouldn’t always be available for people to play. Their infrequency makes them special and is a big reason that people want to play them. Taking that away will make them seem like any other mission that must be done, which could end with them being ignored for easier ones with better chances of completion.
Furthermore, planets constantly being under attack could irritate players, forcing them to defend Super Earth’s territory out of fear of consequences rather than having the freedom to choose what they want to take on. Such a thing could lead to a decline in the game’s player base, essentially doing the opposite of defense campaigns’ intent.
Defense campaigns may have some of the hardest mission objectives in Helldivers 2, but there’s no doubt that they can be exciting and rile up the community whenever they appear. Arrowhead Game Studios could always make them a constant part of the game, but the pros and cons of such a decision will likely mean that the developer won’t attend to it until far into the future.
