Black Ops 6 Has Fans Wanting Proper Factions Again

Black Ops 6 Has Fans Wanting Proper Factions Again

Key Takeaways

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has fans of the series pining for the return of the old faction system from games like Modern Warfare 2.
  • Many miss the unique spawn music and announcers that the factions came with, while others enjoyed being able to see enemies at a quick glance thanks to faction uniforms.
  • Unfortunately, with how much cash skins make for Activision, we’ll probably never see the faction system make a proper return, even though it absolutely should.

Call of Duty has considerably transformed from the series that it once was back on the Xbox 360 and PS3. A lot of that is down to the monetization of video games, as Call of Duty has opted to trade in more realistic and gritty shooters to chase the Fortnite gravy train, introducing battle passes and increasingly bizarre skins for players to buy for their weapons and character models.

This shift towards the Fortnitification of Call of Duty has seen many aspects of the older games removed or warped in different ways, one of which being the old faction system. In earlier games where skins just weren’t a thing, like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, players differentiated themselves by being placed in different factions, that would often have unique character models and spawn music that made each faction feel distinct.

It’s this system that Call of Duty players have been pining for recently, most likely brought about by the recent release of Black Ops 6. In a Reddit thread on the Call of Duty subreddit, a user called Vanilla_Ice_Best_Boy shared their love of the old factions system that Call of Duty used to have, sharing some of the more iconic logos of said factions in an accompanying image.

That post has exploded in popularity, reaching a whopping 11,000 upvotes at the time of writing, with hundreds of comments from other people describing how much they like factions back. For example, a user called Hunterknowsbest talks about how much they “miss the different announcers and spawn music”, as well as how the weapon you chose determined what your character would look like.

A lot of people, such as user Mikebyrneyadigg, also miss how it was easy to distinguish between friend and foe at a glance with the old faction system, and that the weirder skins in the modern games make it “a nightmare to figure out who’s who” in Hardcore modes. Apart from that, it’s mostly Call of Duty fans pining for the days in which they could play as factions like Rangers, Spetsnaz, Delta, Task Force 141, and more.

Unfortunately, as much as we would all love these factions to return, and some semblance of team uniforms again, skins probably make Activision far too much money to simply abandon. Whether we like it or not, the old faction system is most likely gone for good, so all we can do is pour one out for the glory days of Call of Duty.

Forced to go rogue. Hunted from within. This is Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.

Developed by Treyarch and Raven, Black Ops 6 is a spy action thriller set in the early 90s, a period of transition and upheaval in global politics, characterized by the end of the Cold War and the rise of the United States as a single superpower. With a mind-bending narrative, and unbound by the rules of engagement, this is signature Black Ops.

The Black Ops 6 Campaign provides dynamic moment-to-moment gameplay that includes a variety of play spaces with blockbuster set pieces and action-packed moments, high-stakes heists, and cloak-and-dagger spy activity.

In a best-in-class Multiplayer experience, players will test their skills across 16 new maps at launch, including 12 core 6v6 maps and 4 Strike maps that can be played 2v2 or 6v6.

Black Ops 6 also marks the epic return of Round-Based Zombies, the fan-favorite mode where players will take down hordes of the undead in two brand-new maps at launch. Post-launch, players can look forward to even more exciting maps and groundbreaking experiences dropping into both Multiplayer and Zombies.
