Square Enix Delists Triangle Strategy On Switch eShop, Could See Bigger Release

Square Enix Delists Triangle Strategy On Switch eShop, Could See Bigger Release

Key Takeaways

  • Triangle Strategy has been delisted from Nintendo’s eShop, though it’s a temporary move, according to Square Enix.
  • The tactical RPG will return at some point. However, when it does, its publisher may switch to Square Enix and not Nintendo.
  • A similar situation occured with both Octopath Traveler titles, with the end result being a multiplatform release for the two games.

Triangle Strategy, the tactical role-playing-game from Square Enix, which was exclusively released on the Nintendo Switch could potentially make its way to non-Nintendo platforms relatively soon. That’s because, on early Sunday, Square Enix revealed that it would be temporarily delisting the title digitally on Nintendo’s eShop, with the game slated to return at an unannounced date.

A cursory look at Triangle Strategy’s Nintendo page shows that it is indeed unavailable for purchase digitally, though physical editions, along with those who already purchased it digitally, are unaffected.

A delisting followed up by a relisting is rather unprecedented in this era of games. However, another Square Enix title also experienced a similar situation, which is why there are rumors of a larger re-release.

Octopath Traveler Eventually Went Multiplatform

As some gamers may recall, both Octopath Traveler and its sequel, Octopath Traveler II, eventually made their way beyond Nintendo’s handheld. The original Octopath Traveler was released in 2018, before making its way to PlayStation consoles earlier this year.

Similar to Triangle Strategy, Octopath Traveler was delisted from the eShop before eventually returning. When the game did return, its publisher was no longer listed as Nintendo, with Square assuming publishing rights.

It’s impossible to say whether Triangle Strategy will have the same fate, though recent history suggests that it’s a rather safe bet. As for when a potential multiplatform release or announcement could happen, well, that’s anyone’s guess, but with The Game Awards looming, business could pick up relatively soon.
