Horror classics are making a big comeback and Robert Eggers’ remake of the 1922 silent film, Nosferatu, could be the one that tops them all. However, not everything came up smelling of roses in the filming process of the gothic horror, as Eggers recalls having to deal with thousands of pungent critters that made the set almost unbearable. The highly anticipated upcoming horror movie is a remake of the silent vampire film directed by F. W. Murnau, in which an obsession between a young woman and a terrifying vampire infatuated with her begins to untangle a web of devastation onto 19th century Germany. Nosferatu also includes a fantastic line-up of seasoned actors who have starred in previous creepy movies themselves, with the likes of Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney, and Willem Dafoe taking the center stage.
One face that many scary movie lovers will recognize is Bill Skarsgård, who plays the sadistic clown Pennywise in the horror films It (2017) and It Chapter Two (2019), based on Stephen King’s novel. This time, Bill Skarsgård will step inside the shoes of the eponymous Count Orlok, or more familiarly known as Nosferatu, who will feast upon the blood of living humans and cause terror within the hearts of anyone in his presence. As horrific as the bloodthirsty vampire sounds, it seems that there was something slightly more unsettling on the set of Nosferatu.

Robert Eggers Reveals the Nasty Side of Having 5000 Rats in Nosferatu
According to Deadline, Nosferatu director Robert Eggers revealed some important factors that went into making the film, which included 5000 incontinent rats. Eggers said that he used trained rats to include in the background of some scenes in the movie but didn’t realize that having so many would be such a painstaking endeavor, as well as a very smelly one. He stated that when viewers see rats in the foreground that they are indeed real ones, but then used CGI to thin them out a bit.
However, Eggers went onto say that even though the rats were very well-trained, he didn’t know just how much they went to the bathroom everywhere and noted that the “smell was insane.” On the plus side of that really stinky revelation, it certainly does add an extra layer of realism for the time period and an authentic experience all around. It also goes to show that Robert Eggers is the ideal filmmaker to helm Nosferatu, due to his ability to capture historical elements so well, as shown in The Witch and The Lighthouse.
Eggers’ upcoming horror film is one of 2024s most anticipated horror movies and, for those who haven’t watched the original, due to its silent stance, Nosferatu aims to take a deeper dive into its story in a bid to offer the old classic in a different way, as the new film is set even earlier than Bram Stoker’s writings. Even though it might not be everyone’s idea of a stereotypical Christmas movie, Nosferatu will arrive in theaters on December 25.
