Pokemon TCG Pocket Has Good News for Players

Key Takeaways

  • Genetic Apex booster packs will remain in Pokemon TCG Pocket following the game’s next expansion.
  • It’s unclear if the original set will be available indefinitely, or if it will be removed in a later update.
  • Trading will be introduced to the game in January 2025, and new cards will be added before the end of 2024.

The Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket team has confirmed that Genetic Apex booster packs won’t be removed when the game’s next expansion is released. Pokemon TCG Pocket players have been scrambling to snag every card from the game’s first set, but it seems that there’s no need to rush.

Since hitting mobile devices on October 30, Pokemon TCG Pocket has skyrocketed in popularity, surpassing 30 million downloads and earning over $120 million globally. While the physical Pokemon card game features thousands upon thousands of unique cards to collect, the mobile version is just getting started, currently offering 250 cards for players to discover. More booster packs are expected to be added to the game before the end of 2024, prompting many fans to worry that current cards from the Genetic Apex set would be phased out. Thankfully, it seems that players don’t need to worry about missing out on any currently available offerings.

One Pokemon TCG Pocket Type is Getting the Short End of the Stick

Pokemon TCG Pocket has some pretty obvious balancing issues at launch, but one Pokemon type in particular is doing a little worse than the others.

According to a new post on the Japanese Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket Twitter account (and spotted by Dexerto), the original Apex trilogy of booster packs will still be available when the next expansion for the game is released. It’s unclear whether these packs will stick around indefinitely, or if they’ll be removed further down the line, but for now, players don’t need to rush to complete their current Pokemon TCG Pocket Pokedex. Many live service games offer content for a limited time to pressure players to spend money before their chance is gone, but it looks like Pokemon TCG Pocket is avoiding this model–for now, at least.

The Genetic Apex Set Won’t Be Removed From Pokemon TCG Pocket Following the Game’s Next Expansion

In early November, it was announced that Pokemon TCG Pocket would be adding limited trading in January 2025, allowing players to swap select cards before the feature is expanded at a later date. More features are said to be in development, though it’s unclear what additional game modes will be coming to the title in the future. The title’s December 2024 events were recently datamined, including a Wonder Pick event featuring Magnemite and Bulbasaur, along with a Venusaur EX battle event similar to the previous Lapras EX offering.

As Pokemon TCG Pocket continues to grow and evolve, the franchise is gearing up for its next big release. Pokemon Legends: Z-A is scheduled to release sometime in 2025 and will transport players to the Kalos region, which first appeared in Pokemon X and Y in 2013. The title is the second Pokemon Legends game, following the 2022 hit Pokemon Legends: Arceus, and will bring back the beloved Mega Evolution mechanic.
