Ahead of its launch, publisher Maximum Entertainment has shared some new Overthrown screenshots, which Game Rant can now exclusively reveal. Aside from offering another look at the game’s colorful visuals, the images also illustrate its main twist: Overthrown is a city builder that’s primarily played from a third-person perspective. Although this idea is far from unprecedented—Natsume’s Metropolismania employed a similar concept in 2001, and it wasn’t the first to do so—it’s nowadays rare enough to potentially help Overthrown differentiate itself from its many rivals.

Rather than (solely) sticking to a bird’s-eye view, Overthrown will put players in the shoes of a queen who’s willing to get her hands dirty, whether by chopping down trees, building infrastructure, or defending townsfolk from brazen bandits and menacing mutants alike. On that note, Overthrown will also incorporate classic action-adventure elements, highlighted by the queen’s ability to run across water and wield her weapons with anime-style speed and flair. Once the dust settles, the players will be able to return to building stuff and managing their city. A classic bird’s-eye camera will also be part of the package for anyone who wishes to leverage it.

Brimstone said that Overthrown is planned to remain in early access for around a year, so the game might be treated to a full-fledged release as early as late 2025. In the meantime, the studio plans to make use of early access to solicit player feedback that will help shape its upcoming city builder. The day-one version of Overthrown will be playable solo and feature online co-op support for up to six people. It will also incorporate seasons, each of which will come with its own unique challenges, opportunities, and visuals.

The city builder’s early access version will be playable on the Xbox Series X/S and PC (via Steam) starting December 5. Overthrown will also be a day-one Xbox Game Pass release, available via PC Game Pass and the Ultimate tier of Microsoft’s subscription service. Since Sony doesn’t allow early access titles on the PS Store, Overthrown will be skipping PlayStation during this phase of development. However, the game is eventually planned to land on the PS5 as well.
