Pokemon Fan Designs Normal/Ghost-type Regional Variant for Rattata

A prolific Pokemon fan recently created an amusing regional variant for Rattata and its evolution, turning these classic creatures into Normal/Ghost-type monsters. Regional variants have been a popular concept in Pokemon fan art since their introduction in Pokemon Sun and Moon, and this fan had a pretty creative take on what these new critters could look like.

Originally introduced in Pokemon Red and Blue, Rattata is perhaps one of the most common Pokemon to appear in the series, and likely one of the first to be captured in the earliest games of the franchise. The Normal-type Pokemon looks like a small mouse with big teeth and purple skin, and it evolves into Raticate starting at Level 20. In Pokemon Sun and Moon, Rattata and Raticate gained Dark/Normal-type variants, which had black fur and different whiskers.

Now, a Pokemon fan artist named Matratzfratz has devised Flattata and Raticarcas, respectively Normal/Ghost-type and Ghost/Normal-type variants for the popular mouse. While Flattata is clearly inspired by the idea of a wild Rattata becoming roadkill, Raticarcas’ design is more ghost-like, as if the creature’s carcass was slowly becoming a spirit after being left out for days. It was surely a creative concept and was quickly praised by the community, which gave Matratzfratz over 2,200 upvotes.

Pokemon Fan Devises Hilarious Normal/Ghost-type Variant for Rattata

This is not the first time that Matratzfratz created a regional variant that puts a smart twist on a popular Gen 1 Pokemon. A few months ago, for example, the fan designed an Oddish regional variant with unique evolutions. In this variant, a normal Oddish would get infected with leaf miners, which would slowly take over its body, growing when it becomes Gloom and turning the Pokemon into a completely different Bug/Grass-type creature in its final form, when the bug finally takes control over the poor plant.

In another recent fan art, Matratzfratz devised a Flying-type regional variant for Ponyta. In this artwork, they turned Ponyta into what seemed like a half-Pegasus half-chariot critter with white fur and blue feathers, creating a unique and unexpected design that the community quickly applauded.

Other artists have also created fan art reimagining Rattata and its evolutions. For example, one fan created a third form for Rattata earlier this year. Called Ratiking, the new Pokemon was also a Normal/Ghost-type monster, but it appears after several Raticate intertwine their tails in a strange ritual and use their newfound ghost powers and ethereal energy to fight.
