Netflix's Monster Season 3 Behind-The-Scenes Photo Shows Charlie Hunnam as Infamous Serial Killer

Key Takeaways

  • Netflix renews Monster for season 3 focusing on Ed Gein, not John Wayne Gacy as previously thought.
  • Cast includes Charlie Hunnam, Laurie Metcalf, and Tom Hollander portraying iconic figures in Gein’s life.
  • Gein’s horrific crimes inspired famous horror movie characters and season release expected in fall 2025.

Ryan Murphy’s anthology series Monster has already been renewed by Netflix for another exciting third season and now true-crime fans can feast their eyes on some behind-the-scenes images of Charlie Hunnam as he gears up to jump into the shoes of the notorious serial killer, Ed Gein. Initially, there was a bit of confusion about whom the next season would be about, with some fans thinking that John Wayne Gacy, the sadistic Killer Clown, would become Murphy’s next subject. However, Netflix officially confirmed that the focus would be on Gein, a serial killer also known as the Butcher of Plainfield or the Plainfield Ghoul, whose gruesome crimes gained worldwide notoriety in the late 1940s and 1950s.

Every season of Monster has focused on different true-crime stories, with the very first one honing into the story of Jeffrey Dahmer, played by Evan Peters, who portrayed the serial killer and sex offender, nicknamed the Milwaukee Cannibal. Season two of Monster, titled The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, starred Cooper Koch and Nicholas Alexander Chavez as the Menendez brothers who were convicted for the murders of their parents. Ryan Murphy, who also directed American Horror Story, said that season three of Monster would be titled The Original Monster, due to Gein’s crimes coming before the likes of Ted Bundy and John Wayne Gacy.

First Photo Of Charlie Hunnam From Netflix’s Monster Season 3

New behind-the-scenes images of Charlie Hunnam as the horrendous killer Ed Gein have been snapped. Hunnam can be seen wearing an oversized red and black checkered flannel jacket and dark brown trousers. Even Hunnam’s usual luscious blonde locks have been trimmed back to mimic Gein’s 1950s comb-over and a closely shaved face. Hunnam, who has starred in other series’ that include Sons of Anarchy and Kai in Rebel Moon, is joined in season three by The Big Bang Theory and Roseanne star Laurie Metcalf, who will be playing Gein’s mother, Augusta Wilhelmine Gein. Other cast members include Tom Hollander, who will play Alfred Hitchcock, and Olivia Williams as Alma Reville, Hitchcock’s wife.

Alarm bells first began ringing around the real-life Gein after he was suspected of killing a hardware store owner in 1957, with police then finding not only the body of the murdered woman hanging inside Gein’s house but the savage discovery of bones, skin, and skulls of his past victim’s made into household items that included bowls, spoons, and bedposts. Later, it was uncovered that he also visited his local graveyard in La Crosse, Wisconsin to dig up bodies to take back to his farm. Gein’s terrible crimes were the inspiration behind countless horror movie characters, like Psycho‘s Norman Bates, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre‘s Leatherface, and Silence of the Lambs‘ Buffalo Bill.

As yet, Monster season three doesn’t have a release date, but Ryan Murphy previously revealed that filming would begin on 31st October, so the highly anticipated series is still in its early production days. If the timeline of the third season of Monster mirrors previous seasons, it’s likely fans won’t get to watch it until the fall of 2025, as the first two seasons were both released in mid-September.
