There’s never been a better time to jump into Fallout 76 than now. Coming off the success of the well-regarded Amazon TV adaptation, Fallout games saw a huge rise in popularity, including 76, which saw a record peak on Steam.

All along the way, Bethesda has been regularly providing updates to 76, helping to ensure that players have access to a wide variety of events and mutations. With the drop of Season 19’s calendar, Bethesda has confirmed that playable ghouls will be released in March of next year to coincide with the game’s Season 20 update.

It’s a massive bit of news for fans of the game, as Bethesda had previously announced the feature during the Xbox Games Showcase back in June.

Fallout 76’s Creative Director Talks Ghouls, Map Expansions, And Players Being Too Nice

Fallout 76 creative director Jon Rush chats to us at Gamescom, going over the MMO’s past and present, and what this means for Fallout 5.

Everyone Wants To Be A Ghoul

Coming off the success of the TV show, particularly Walton Goggins’ Cooper Howard, Bethesda knew what it had to do. Indeed, in an interview, producer Bill LaCoste revealed that the show gave the team the confirmation to go forward with a long simmering idea.

“We had this in mind, making this a playable thing in the future, and when the TV show hit and people loved The Ghoul, we knew we’d made the right decision,” he said.

The Ghoul will be more than just an appearance swap, as it’ll carry specific perks and abilities central to the transformation, including harnessing the power of radiation. More so, NPCs in the 76 world will react differently to the player if they are a Ghoul, according to an interview creative director Jon Rush conducted with TheGamer.

“That will absolutely be a factor. Things will be different if you’re a Ghoul,” he said at Gamescom.

And if there weren’t enough Ghouls in the world, it’s absolutely a “consideration” for Bethesda heading into Fallout 5. For now, though, we’ll have 76 to look forward to, and that will hopefully give us a baseline for how a playable Ghoul could work in future titles.
