Dragon Age: The Veilguard – Unwelcome Guests Walkthrough

Dragon Age: The Veilguard - Unwelcome Guests Walkthrough

When you first recruit Emmrich in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, you have to help him stop a Venatori infiltration of the Grand Necropolis. Someone told them about powerful secrets hidden in the crypts, and their investigations have left a mess behind.

You can start the quest “Unwelcome Guests” at any point after you recruit Emmrich. Simply head back to the Necropolis location on the Dragon Age: The Veilguard world map and speak to the Mourn Watch leaders to begin. This quest isn’t necessary to finishing the story, but it goes a long way towards clearing up the Necropolis and strengthening the Mourn Watch.

Where to Find the First Venatori Group

Dragon Age Veilguard Unwelcome Guests Upper

The first set of Venatori cultists are right outside the Hollow Belfry, although they’ve made it harder to move around thanks to some red lyrium barriers. To reach them, take the northeast exit from the belfry and turn right. There’s a red lyrium barrier straight ahead, but you can destroy it easily. The enemies include four Venatori Soldiers, who are vulnerable to cold and resist fire.

Once the soldiers go down, you’ll notice a triple barrier that protects the goods the Venatori are trying to steal from the Necropolis. To take it down, you first need to destroy red lyrium crystals to the left and right of the barrier. Both are concealed behind breakable boxes and barrels. This lets you destroy a crystal floating above the west end of the room, and doing that lets you destroy the large barrier. Behind it is a Memento and a Codex item.

While you’re here, be sure to destroy two more red lyrium barriers that block the door back to the Hollow Belfry and to the southwest passage. Doing so will make navigating the Necropolis much easier.

Where to Find the Second Venatori Group

The second Venatori team is in the Cascades area, and there are two ways to reach them. First, you can go straight from the Hollow Belfry’s northeast exit and make your way around the path you took during the Emmrich recruitment quest. However, the shorter path is to continue clockwise along the Path of Sighs and through the Spectral Court. You may need to defeat Burgeoning Malice if you haven’t yet.

From the Spectral Court, take the south exit and head down the path. You’ll eventually hear the Venatori talking to each other ahead. This group includes a Lesser Voltaic Shade (vulnerable to cold and resistant to necrotic, despite the electrical name), three Venatori Soldiers, and one Cult Mage. You’ll need to destroy a red lyrium crystal to harm the Cult Mage, but he doesn’t have much health or barrier once you do.

The quest ends the moment you defeat both groups. Your rewards include 500 XP, 200 gold, 5 fade-touched ore, and +50 to both Mourn Watch and Shadow Dragons Strength. However, you can still get more rewards if you figure out a puzzle in the second room.

How to Solve the Cascades Brazier Puzzle

The room where you find the second Venatori group holds four large green braziers. One of them has fallen over, but the other three are still standing.

The moment you approach a standing brazier, a wisp will jump out of the bowl. You can then interact with the brazier to light it. Unlike other puzzles of this nature, you don’t need to light them in any specific order. Instead, the hard part is finding the three braziers in the monochromatic Necropolis.

  • One is near the east corner of the room, on the same wall as the broken brazier.
  • One is on the southwest wall in the north corner of the room.
  • One is in the west corner of the room, to the left of the exit that leads to the Spectral Court.

When you light all three, the broken brazier will glow orange, and you can use Placate Mischief on it to free a wisp. Bring this wisp to the wisp node southwest of the brazier to open a door. Behind the door is a Memento painting, a small chest, and a skeleton Emmrich can talk to if he’s in the main party. This conversation gives you no items or XP, but it does increase your bond with Emmrich.
