Grab the Free Sony PS VR Camera Adaptor Before It's Discontinued

The PS VR2 may be the target of most PlayStation gamers, but not everyone has upgraded. With complaints about a limited game selection, some owners of the original PlayStation VR headset are standing pat. To use the PS VR1 with the PS5, both the PlayStation Camera and an adapter are necessary. Until now, Sony was distributing the official PS VR Camera Adapter for free, but that offer will only last until November 26th, 2024. Even though third-party options exist, affected gamers should request their adapter on the PlayStation website while supplies last.

One roadblock when connecting the PS VR1 to the PS5 is the lack of a compatible camera port. The free Sony adapter solves that issue with a straightforward installation process. The component connects to a USB port on the rear of the PS5, while the PS4 camera connects to the device’s AUX port. Once setup is complete, playing VR-supported PS4 titles on the newer console is possible. Also, gamers can use the PlayStation Move and PS VR Aim Controller for realistic inputs when engaged in virtual worlds.

PS VR1 owners automatically qualify for Sony’s free adapter. The manufacturer has set up an automated request system on its website, which requires entering the PS VR’s serial number. Once a shipping address is supplied, the adapter will be on its way. However, gamers have reported limited success with this method. As an alternative, Sony recommends calling their technical support phone line.

The situation is not so dire thanks to manufacturers making reliable PS VR1 camera adapter clones. Even after Sony stops shipping adapters, PS4 VR gamers won’t be left without solutions. Buyers can find branded and unbranded options on popular marketplaces like Amazon. The example below, developed by Plauduct, has excellent reviews and works just as well as the official adapter. Still, the device isn’t free, and some gamers undoubtedly prefer a Sony-approved accessory.

Gamers with the original PlayStation VR (PSVR) can rely on this camera adapter to use the VR headset with Sony’s latest console. The adapter connects to a USB port on the PS5, while the PSVR camera connects to the accessory’s AUX input. Then, gamers can play supported PS4 titles on the PS5, including games that use the PlayStation Move VR Aim controllers.

Of course, PS4 gamers who have already purchased a PS5 could simply upgrade to the PS VR 2. Our review of the PlayStation VR 2 discussed how the updated headset showcased a higher resolution and controllers with superior haptic feedback. Yet, despite these advancements, the PS VR 2 has faced a rocky reception from gamers. Much of the criticism has centered around a poor selection of games, but the headset also arrived at a high cost to buyers. Since then, Sony has released an adapter for gaming PCs and cut the price of the system. Nevertheless, Sony may already be looking toward the future with a patent for a new VR headset.
