It is amazing to realize just how much content the original Dragon Quest 3 contained in such a small package. One of the ways it did this was by having a full day and night cycle, which allowed players to discover secrets based solely on time of day. Dragon Quest 3 Remake stays incredibly true to the original, fully utilizing its time cycle in several important ways.

How to Pass Time Quickly in Dragon Quest 3 Remake:

While players could simply let time pass on foot, this would be impractical because several pieces of content can only be accessed at specific times of day. For that reason, the developers created a way of quickly passing time.

When you enter an Inn, there will always be an NPC at the front desk who asks the player whether they want to stay overnight or rest awhile. Remember, staying overnight will always result in you leaving the Inn the next morning. To pick a specific time, select rest awhile. This will bring up a menu with the following times available for you to select:

Resting at an Inn is not free. It will cost the same as staying overnight. Certain locations are more expensive than others, and as your party begins to level-up, it will cost more money to refill your health and MP.

Night Light and Tick-Tock in Dragon Quest 3 Remake

Later in the game, players will unlock two two methods of chaning the time of day in Dragon Quest 3 Remake.

  • Night Light: Once you acquire the ship in Portoga, you’ll have access to the village of Theddon. At night, all the NPCs turn to skeletons, and you can access previously inaccessible areas. In the shop, head upstairs and search the drawers. There you’ll find the Night Light. This item allows you to change time of day from anywhere in the overworld. You cannot be inside a town or dungeon, only in the main overworld.
  • Tick-Tock: The Mage and Sage vocations will eventually unlock the Tick-Tock ability, which allows you to change time of day. It works the same as the Night Light, meaning you must be outside towns or dungeons to use it. Both only work outside combat.

Another important reason for changing the time of day is related to several side-quests. There will be many times when players can only encounter certain characters, or certain solutions at night.

Finally, there are towns, merchants, and other NPCs that are only open or available at specific times of day. There is an entire town filled with stores and inhabitants that are only available at night. This is by no means everything. In fact, it is just scratching the surface. As you continue to explore, you will find more and more reasons to change the time of day.
