PS5 Slim Will Seemingly Be Getting A Price Cut For Black Friday

PS5 Slim Will Seemingly Be Getting A Price Cut For Black Friday

Key Takeaways

  • PlayStation ran an ad on Tuesday that ended with a new reduced price for the digital edition of its slim PS5.
  • The ad was quickly pulled, but it seems the price will be in effect some time between now and Black Friday.
  • It noted that the price will remain live beyond Black Friday and that the PS5 will be on sale through December 24.

Even though the PS5 Pro’s price point might make it feel like current-gen gaming is more expensive than ever, there are ways to get a PS5 for less, and not just by buying one a scalper has been forced to list for less. PlayStation ran an ad on Tuesday revealing the slimmer model of the base PS5 will be getting a $70 price cut, bringing its price down to $379.99.

Don’t rush to PlayStation Direct or any other retailer selling PlayStation’s latest console just yet. It would appear that the ad was run by mistake as PlayStation quickly removed it and replaced it with one that makes no mention of the sale price. There’s an outside chance the ad wasn’t supposed to air at all. The more likely scenario is someone published it on PlayStation’s YouTube channel a little early.

The ad even provided dates, making it even more likely that the sale price was flaunted too soon rather than in error. According to the delisted advert (thanks, IGN), even though the slim PS5 will be discounted for Black Friday weekend, it won’t return to full price once Cyber Monday has been and gone. The console will remain $70 cheaper than usual throughout most of December, not returning to full price until Christmas Day.

The goal here, of course, is to get as many PS5s in homes and under Christmas trees by December 25. At last count, the PS5 had sold 65 million units during its first four years. While that’s significantly more consoles than Xbox has managed to shift during the same period, its numbers are lagging slightly behind where the PS4 was four years on from its launch.

While it’s too early to tell how well the PS5 Pro is selling just one week after release, its availability everywhere indicates that it might not be selling quite as well as PlayStation would have hoped, although Sony’s president has insisted otherwise. If you just want a PS5 and don’t care whether it’s a Pro or not, not only will the slim model almost certainly be on sale very soon, but PlayStation’s refurbished PS5s are still available and start at just $349.99.

Potentially discounted slim PS5s won’t be the only video game offer up for grabs this Black Friday weekend, of course. Nintendo has already announced some of its sale plans and unlike PlayStation, it didn’t pull the details minutes later. Tears Of The Kingdom, Pikmin 4, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons will all be on sale, and a deal that gets you 12 months of NSO’s Expansion Pack free with the Hyrule Edition Switch Lite is live right now.
