How To Solve The In Memoriam Murders In Dragon Age: The Veilguard

There are plenty of occasions to commune with, fight, or otherwise interact with the undead in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. In Memoriam offers an in-depth murder mystery with the help of a benevolent spirit, aptly named Compassion. In Memoriam is a bit of a sneaky quest, as you might not realize you’re in the middle of it until you’ve already stepped too far in to turn back.

Sometimes, Dragon Age gives you exactly what it says it will.

Luckily, this makes for a more natural progression of events, as you get pulled into the unusual tale you uncover through a series of notes. Whether you’ve already discovered the beginning or are unsure where to start, we’ve got everything you need to complete In Memoriam.

How To Begin In Memoriam

To begin In Memoriam, head to Razikale Walk, where you’ll notice a corpse with a sword sticking out of it beneath a yellow exclamation mark, indicating a quest.

Approach the body and investigate it, triggering a creature called Despondence to appear alongside Superior Shades.

Despondence and the Shades are both weak to Fire and resist Cold.

Despondence is a powerful enemy with the Glass Cannon and Exploding modifiers. It will use an attack that darkens your surroundings, blinding you for most of the battle.

Pursue Despondence closely and continue to inflict damage as quickly as possible to end this fight as soon as you can, or you put yourself at risk of being taken for a journey across the map as Despondence flees and slows you with enemy spawns.

Once you finish this difficult engagement, investigate the sword from the beginning and witness the appearance of a spirit, which will officially begin In Memoriam.

How To Solve The Murders & Find The Victims

The good news is, that from the moment you receive the popup for the quest, you’ve already made progress, and both of your current objectives will be half done.

Follow the closer marker to the next clue to the bridge murder and investigate the small shed to find Hortensia’s Garden Journal.

Reading this journal will automatically summon the spirit to speak with you again, and they want to know more about the other victims.

This will complete the objective, “Solve the bridge murder.”

From here, follow your marker east along Razikale’s Walk to the Urthemiel Venue, unlocking the fast-travel point along the way.

Go up the series of ladders near the marker and jump across the gaps to reach Spare Coin Way.

Progress through the hallway in the Temple Of Andraste to Andraste’s Watch, where you’ll find a second victim impaled with a sword.

Defeat the Shades that appear here, including another challenging enemy: Remorse, which is weak to Fire but resists Cold.

This enemy also boasts the Devouring and Juggernaut modifiers, so it can be extremely tanky and difficult to kill if you get hit by too many attacks, allowing the enemy to devour your HP.

Remorse will use the same blinding attack that makes the world around you go dark, launching Cold magic at you in the darkness.

Pursue Remorse as it attempts to flee all over Andraste’s Watch and nearby areas until it eventually goes down.

After the fight, Compassion will appear again and implore you to find out more about the murder victim, updating that objective to two of three, while adding a new objective: solve the temple murder, at one of two.

From here, follow your marker south to Spare Coin Way, where you’ll find another victim off to the right from where you climbed the ladders earlier.

Another demon named Isolation will appear. In addition to the Colossal, Sadistic, and Knockback modifiers that make this enemy a challenge, it’s weak to Fire but resists Cold damage.

This enemy is just as difficult as the two previous demons and will take as much effort and patience to defeat. Keep in hot pursuit and it won’t be so bad.

Once you’re victorious, approach the third victim’s body, triggering Compassion’s appearance again.

This will complete your objective of finding more victims, leaving you with one of two progress for two objectives:

  • Solve the temple murders
  • Solve the market murders

Follow your marker to the Temple Courtyard and defeat the Venatori you find in the area, then progress to the northern portion of Andraste’s Watch, where you’ll find a note called Property Of Marcus, Scholar.

Compassion appears and speaks, completing your objective to solve the temple murder.

This leaves you with just the market murder to solve, so head to the Urthemiel Venue again and locate the ladder around the same area on the map as the fast-travel beacon.

Climb the ladder to the top, where you’ll find some notes; the one you need is Charcoal Drawing Of A Rooftop.

Read this note and Compassion will appear for the final time, revealing the truth behind the murders.

What Rewards Do You Get From In Memoriam?

Rook receives rewards from In Memoriam in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

Once Compassion finishes speaking, you’ll complete In Memoriam, which will award the following

  • 500 XP
  • Bond increases with your companions
  • Gold
  • Fade-Touched Crystals

While the rewards aren’t stellar, you should rack up more XP and loot along your way to each objective, so it evens out.
