Familiar Fall Guys energy boosted by Sonic’s charm

SEGA has finally launched its casual party gameSonic Rumble, which is also its first multiplayer party game. The game offers a variety of game modes, stages, iconic characters and skills, and more. In this Sonic Rumble review, I will share my impressions of the game and provide an honest rating.

For this review, I played Sonic Rumble on a Samsung Galaxy A33 5G (Android), racking up a total of 14 hours of playtime. This allowed me to fully explore and experience everything that the game has to offer, providing me with a solid foundation for a thorough analysis.

The gameplay feels entertaining, even if the core is not entirely new

Starting with the review, let’s dive into the gameplay experience of Sonic Rumble. Here, you begin with a match tutorial first, where you’re taught everything clearly, followed by 3 rounds of Survival, where you get the basic gist of how everything works out.

It obviously plays out like a highly popular party title, Fall Guys, but with the charm of Sonic and more fast-paced gameplay with iconic skills, which, at least for me, was more fun, at least in comparison to other recent party-like battle royale format titles like Squid Game: Unleashed or Ninja Party.

Sonic’s signature charm shines through the visuals, supported by solid audio

When it comes to the visuals and audio design, I honestly have nothing much to complain about. It looks captivating with that familiar Sonic charm, and it does feel great the moment you start playing. I also enjoyed the character design and how well each stage was crafted.

Moreover, the audio design also fits the theme perfectly and delivers that classic arcade feel from older titles. It does its job of keeping you hooked, without pulling your attention away from the gameplay.

The UI supports the gameplay well, and the controls feel responsive throughout

And Sonic Rumble does a great job of providing a smooth and simple UI that genuinely improves your overall gameplay experience. I never felt it confusing, especially since new sections unlock gradually as you progress. This makes everything easier to follow and navigate.

The icons are also placed neatly with clear fonts, so I doubt you’ll run into issues there. Plus, the team did a solid job with the controls too, as my time with the game was good, and it felt responsive and comfortable. I did lose a few times, but that was just my skill issue, lol!

The gameplay has great replayability, but the unskippable ADs ruin the mood.

Replayability-wise, it offers you a solid experience with the variety of game modes, so I don’t think you’ll get bored that easily. Moreover, the ability to create or join custom matches makes it more fun, as that way, you can have some quality times with your friends.

But my only complaint is the ADs, which I don’t think a game based on such a huge IP should have. Like, you have a great time competing with others and trying to win the stages, and after it’s over, you get an AD in your face, which is quite irritating, as it is not even optional.

Plenty of in-app purchases are offered, but most rewards feel easy to earn for free

Sonic Rumble offers a range of in-app purchases, such as the Starter Shop, where you can exchange your Rings for items, characters, and skins. Additionally, there are Limited Offers, Skins and Buddies, Daily Claw Machine, Bundles, and more. You can also get the Rumble Plus for daily rewards and more.

Then there’s the section where you can purchase the premium Red Star Rings and even Omni Fragments. However, I didn’t feel the urge to spend, or more precisely, the game doesn’t pressure you to spend money as you can get lot of characters and skins for free, and even a version of the Red Star Rings.

Final Verdict

All in all, Sonic Rumble is a fun party royale take on the beloved IP, and you’ll have an enjoyable experience with this one. It perfectly encapsulates the charm of the series with the thrill of party royale gameplay, offering a variety of unique stages that are not dull, unlike a few other titles of this genre.

One of the best parts that I liked is how smooth the game is, be it the controls or the overall gameplay; I didn’t face any issues. Moreover, modes like Quick Rumble, Ring Survival, and more make it more fun and replayable. And like most party royale titles out there, you don’t have to spend money to enjoy it.

So, with its competitive touch, charming visuals and character designs, simplified cosmetic and progression systems, time-limited events, character customization, iconic skills, and more, Sonic Rumble is a must-try title, especially if you love the franchise or just the party royale genre in general. I wish they removed ADs entirely, though.
