Upgrade Costs, Changes, and Progression

Level 16 is finally becoming a reality in Clash Royale, arriving almost two years after Level 15 was introduced in 2023. This time, the idea is to make upgrading feel clearer and smoother, but also to give you a new long-term goal if your account is already maxed. Here’s a simple breakdown of what Level 16 means for you and how it affects progression.

Understanding the necessity of Level 16 in Clash Royale

Level 15 was meant to refresh progression back in 2023, but it didn’t quite land the way players hoped. The Elite Level system and Elite Wild Cards made the process confusing, and many of you felt stuck afterwards.

Level 16 comes as part of a larger cleanup, from what the team says, as the developers want upgrades to feel straightforward again while giving veteran players something meaningful to chase. For this very reason, reaching Level 16 requires fewer total cards than reaching the old Level 15 did.

The card requirements have been cut short, especially in the mid-levels, so progressing toward Level 16 should feel easy. You no longer need big amounts of Elite Wild Cards, just regular cards, Gold, and Wild Cards. If you were worried about endlessly grinding duplicate cards, this part is actually a buff.

Progression toward Level 16 works a bit differently now because the entire system leans heavily on Gold again. Even though the number of cards you need has been reduced, the Gold cost across mid-levels and Level 16 itself is noticeably higher than what long-time players were used to.

Gold went from being almost useless for maxed accounts to becoming the main resource you need for every upgrade, so if you were already short on it, this update won’t suddenly solve that problem unless Supercell adds new ways to earn more.

On top of that, the old progression items are being phased out and automatically converted into the new system: Elite Wild Cards turn into Gems, Books become Wild Cards (or Gems if it’s a Book of Books), and Magic Coins get converted into Gold.

The exact conversion depends on your King Tower Level since upgrade costs scale with it. Everything converts on its own, and even if your Wild Card storage is full, the extra cards still get added and can be used directly for upgrades, so nothing goes to waste during the transition.
