Experience a faithful anime adaptation with strategic turn-based combat

Starting with the review, let’s dive into the gameplay experience of KAIJU NO. 8 THE GAME. It opens with the sad news of Isao Shinomiya’s death, followed by a basic tutorial-like gameplay on gameplay and controls. You’ll join Kafka and Kikoru, and focus on clearing the stages and recruiting more Units.

As a fan of the manga and anime, I was skeptical about the adaptation, but it exceeded my expectations. The core gameplay features an intuitive turn-based combat system that is both engaging and strategic. Unlike idle titles, here, every move requires thoughtful decisions, though you can still autoplay.

Here, you fight Kaiju in an Action Order, where both your units and the colossal monsters take turns to attack. In battle, you can use Normal Attacks freely with your favorite Units. On top of that, you can also trigger Combat Skills and unleash flashy ultimates like Gen Narumi’s Slash Salvo, which looks very cool.

Moreover, the game also includes a battle buddy system, where each of your four squad members can be paired as a 2-person partners. These buddies can also perform powerful Follow-up Attacks that can break Kaiju plates, explore their cores, and even help them down. Beyond the main battles, you can also clear Expeditions.

Exclusive characters and original storyline add appeal, but content feels limited over time

In terms of content, the game brings in several exclusive characters. It includes Suited, a genius physicist and biologist of CLOZER, Chester Lochburn, a former British defense force captain now with CLOZER, and Sagan Shinomiya, an orphan adopted by the Shinomiya family, who leads CLOZER.

On top of that, the game also features original narratives and untold stories of fan-favorite characters, letting you play side stories. However, after a certain point, the content starts to feel stale and repetitive. It mostly turns into grinding, so it would be great if the team adds more content, modes, and events.

Visuals and audio shine, but performance suffers on budget devices

The game’s visuals and audio design left a strong impression on me. The anime-style cutscenes, detailed character models, weapon designs, and overall artwork bring the game to life beautifully. It is also the key elements that keep you hooked, because who doesn’t like solid visuals?

If you’re already a fan of the series, this part will not let you down. The audio design also pairs perfectly with the game, enhancing every gameplay moment. From the background music during battles to the solid sound effects, everything feels well done and never distracting in my experience. But, I must say that the game is not well optimized, and it’s a bit laggy on budget phones.

Smooth controls and intuitive UI make gameplay effortless

The controls and UI in KAIJU NO. 8 THE GAME are handled well. The screen does have a lot happening, right from Squad Setup and Gacha to other sections, but it’s still fairly easy to navigate. However, the only drawback I faced is that accessing the settings feels like a hassle since it’s not very direct.

As for the controls, they feel smooth and responsive throughout. Here, the button icons are large, have clear fonts, and are easy to understand. You can easily use Normal Attacks, trigger Combat Skills or Ultimates, and even pull off Follow-up Attacks without any delays.

Rerolling is your only saviour in this cutthroat Gacha system

KAIJU NO. 8 THE GAME includes a variety of in-app purchases, such as Continuous Supply Drops, New Recruit Packs, Gacha Ticket packs, and more. These are spread across different sections like Store Purchase, Pickup Medal, Dimensional Crystal Exchange, Weapon Exchange, and more.

Now, if you’re aiming to collect more 5* characters and weapons, it can be tempting to spend money, which is completely understandable. Still, you don’t need to pay to enjoy the game, since a free-to-play approach can also help you secure your favorite 5* units if you follow our Reroll Guide carefully.

That said, many players have raised concerns about the Gacha. Complaints include the weapon pull rate being higher than the character rate, a pity system at 250 summons, expensive summons, and limited ways to earn Dimensional Crystal and tickets. If the team fixes these issues, it would be much better.
