How to unlock Fishing in Destiny: Rising

Fishing doesn’t start right away in Destiny: Rising, and you’ll need to progress a little further into the main story before your Lightbearer can get their hands on a rod. The feature unlocks after completing Chapter 2-3, which rewards you with the side quest Go Fishing.

This quest brings you back to Pandora-7, the eccentric merchant known for their collection of trinkets and travel charms. Once you meet Pandora-7, they’ll provide you with your very first fishing rod along with a small supply of starter bait. A short tutorial cutscene then walks you through the basics, ensuring you understand how casting, waiting for a bite, and reeling in fish work.

From there, you’re free to try out your new skill at the nearby pond in Haven. Also, it’s important to remember that fishing isn’t possible in every body of water. And you can only fish in designated fishing spots, which are marked on the map with a fishing icon.

How to play the Fishing mini-game in Destiny: Rising

The fishing mini-game is surprisingly detailed for what looks like a simple side activity. Here’s how it works step by step:

Equip your Rod and Bait

  • Before casting, choose which rod and bait you want to use. Different baits increase your chances of hooking rarer fish, while better rods have more durability and special bonuses.

Cast your line

  • Tap the fishing rod button to cast into the water.

Wait for a bite

  • The bobber will sit in the water until it wiggles. When it glows yellow, that’s your cue.

Reel in

  • For common fish, a simple tap is all it takes, and they reel in instantly.
  • For rarer catches, you’ll enter the struggle mini-game. And here’s where it gets tricky.
  • You’ll need to deplete the fish’s stamina bar by tapping and holding at the right moments.
  • Spamming the button doesn’t work; in fact, it makes the fish recover faster.
  • Instead, carefully time your taps and holds to keep the bobber aligned with the fish icon until its stamina drops to zero.
  • Once the rare catch stamina is depleted, you’ll automatically reel it in.

Mind your Rod’s durability

  • Every attempt costs durability, and if your rod breaks mid-fight, you’ll lose the catch. Starter rods typically last around 30 casts, while advanced rods last longer and withstand rarer fish struggles.

How to use your Fish in Destiny: Rising

Catching fish is only half the fun, but knowing what to do with them is where things get interesting. Here’s how to use your catch:

Sell for Angler Tokens

  • Open your Ghost menu, navigate to your Inventory, and find your fish under Consumables.
  • Select them and tap Sell.
  • You’ll get Angler Tokens, which serve as currency for fishing supplies and other goodies.

Exchange at Pandora-7’s Shop

  • Visit the Fishing Supply shop, which is also accessible from the Exchange tab in the main Store.
  • Spend Angler Tokens on rods, bait, shaders, and materials.

Feed the Cats

  • Scattered around Haven are adorable cats, and each has preferences for certain colored fish.
  • Pet the cats and offer the right fish to earn bonus Angler Tokens or quirky rewards.

How to get more Bait and Fishing Rods in Destiny: Rising

Your starter supplies won’t last long, but thankfully, Destiny: Rising offers multiple ways to restock:

Bait

  • Buy from Pandora-7’s Fishing Supply shop using Angler Tokens.
  • Some basic bait types, like Makeshift Bait, can also be purchased with Glimmer.
  • Special baits are unlocked by leveling up your Fishing rank or completing fishing challenges. These increase your odds of hooking rare fish.

Rods

  • Basic rods come from Pandora-7’s shop and level rewards.
  • Advanced rods unlock at higher Fishing Levels.
  • Each rod differs in durability and perks, and investing in stronger rods is key if you want rare catches without constant breakage.

Final Thoughts

Fishing in Destiny: Rising might sound like a silly distraction, but once you start, it’s easy to get hooked. It’s a system with depth, literally 75 levels, a skill tree, hidden rewards, and a steady way to earn resources while chilling between battles.

So next time you need a break from raiding or PvP, grab your rod and hit the Haven pond. Who knows, you might reel in something rare, feed a happy cat, or even find yourself giving up the Ghost and becoming a full-time fisherman.
