- Leaked app store images confirm Honkai: Nexus Anima will feature autochess-style gameplay.
- First revealed earlier this year, the game expands the Honkai universe with creature battles.
Honkai: Nexus Anima has once again come into the spotlight after leaked app store images hinted at its gameplay. The screenshots suggest that the next Honkai entry will lean into the autochess genre. While this isn’t the direction we fans expected, it looks like HoYoverse is exploring new territory for the Honkai franchise.
Honkai: Nexus Anima was first revealed as a “creature-training RPG with urban fantasy elements”
The project was first revealed earlier this year through teasers and job listings, which described it as a creature-training RPG with urban fantasy elements. Players will be able to collect and train “Destined Spirits,” who can evolve and gain unique abilities.
Earlier hints even suggested these companions could glide, fly, or surf while uncovering secrets in an explorable world. The autochess angle, however, seems to confirm Honkai: Nexus Anima will focus more on strategy and placement than the combat elements we were actually expecting.
Yes, the mention of “auto battles” was present, but the screenshot indicates that only this would serve as the core gameplay element. From the image, we can see that the main focus is a square board divided into grids, where different spirit-like creatures are placed to fight automatically.
Reactions to the leak have been mixed, with some players comparing it to Riot Games‘ Teamfight Tactics (TFT) while others hoped for something closer to a Pokémon-style RPG, which was also the rumours when the game was first announced.
That said, HoYoverse has previously experimented with autochess-style mini “wargames” in Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, and Zenless Zone Zero, which may have been test runs leading up to this new release. Official details such as release date and platforms still remain unconfirmed.
