SEGA and ATLUS have launched the turn-based ARPG, Persona 5: The Phantom X, a complete alternative timeline following the Persona 5 game. You play as the Protagonist, codename Wonder, as you navigate your Phantom Thief life and high school life. In this Persona 5: The Phantom X: Confidant Guide, you will learn how to manage your daily life in the city, and that includes spending your stamina wisely and building up your Confidants.
These characters aren’t just your friends; they offer powerful bonuses, social stat boosts, and even unlock cool fusion and battle mechanics. Persona 5: The Phantom X Confidants Overview
Your stamina in Persona 5 X is limited, so you’ll want to make sure you’re using it smartly, especially before the daily reset. Always try to avoid being overcapped. If you’re sitting on 15 or more stamina and it’s close to reset, just spend it however you can.
I always go for Confidant activities first, since leveling them up is essential for gaining important character boosts. After that, I focus on tasks that raise my social stats. Things like sports practices or part-time jobs usually give you points in specific categories. For example, soccer practice gives me 8 Proficiency, and working at the Crepe shop gives me 2 Guts.

These stats are important because certain Confidant levels are locked behind social stat requirements. For instance, I couldn’t deepen my bond with Tommoco until I hit Kindness Level 3, and I was stuck at 2! Some activities even offer a big reward, which triples the stat gains or money you earn. Don’t skip those if they pop up!
Gifting System for Confidants
Once you start ranking up with a Confidant, gifting becomes super important. Each Confidant has favorite gifts, and giving them something they like can give a big boost to your bond. For example, when I gave Kotoia a gift she liked from the cosmetics shop, I got a base +14 synergy plus another +14 for giving a preferred item.

But gifts cost money, so if you’re low on cash, it’s a good idea to do a money-earning task before buying gifts. That way, you can keep ranking up Confidants without getting stuck just because you ran out of yen!
List of Confidants you should prioritize early
Now let’s talk about the best Confidants to level up early. While you can pick whoever you like based on your playstyle or preferences, here’s who I recommend based on their rewards:
Tomoko Noge (Moko)
Tomoko is easily my top choice to level up first. Not only does she give out gems and other helpful items, but her Level 5 perk boosts the amount of social stat EXP you get from part-time jobs. So instead of earning 2 Guts, for example, you could earn up to 6 as her rank goes up. This makes her an excellent investment early on when you’re still trying to raise all your stats evenly.
Merope

Second, I go with Merope. She unlocks Fusion options, and those are a game-changer. At rank 5, I could start fusing Archangel. By rank 7, I had access to even more Personas like Setanta, Anubis, Okuninushi, and Narcissus. I liked Narcissus as a solid debuffer, super handy in longer fights!
Motoha Arai (Closer)
Motoha is a strong third pick. At rank 5, their skill lets your entire team recover HP after a battle if you finish it with an All-Out Attack, which is super helpful when you’re dungeon-crawling. By rank 13, you even get a 30% highlight gauge refill after resting in a safe room. This boost is perfect for prepping before tough fights!
Other Noteworthy Confidants
After the big three, I started exploring others depending on my needs.
- Yaoling Li is great if you’re into crafting battle items or cooking. She can help you make more items and even give you a chance to get materials back at higher ranks.
- Meanwhile, Yui is your go-to for cultivation and plant harvesting. She unlocks more flowerpots, lets you get seeds when harvesting, and boosts your yields. If you’re not super into crafting or gardening, you can skip these for now, but they’re worth considering later when you want to diversify.
- Then there’s Kayo Tomiyama, who’s mainly for the fashion lovers. Her rewards revolve around clothing and outfits, so unless you’re all about style, she’s better saved for later.
The Dating System
And of course, we can’t talk about Confidants in a Persona game without mentioning romance. Once a female Confidant hits Level 15, you unlock the option to become Soulmates. Not every character has this available yet, though. For example, Kayo Tomiyama and Yui currently don’t have romance routes. But for the others? Just like in classic Persona 5, you can romance them if they’re not a full-blown adult.
Final Thoughts
Confidants aren’t just optional story characters; they’re the heart of your city life. They help you grow stronger in battle, earn more social stat EXP, get better items, and even unlock new Personas. My advice? Start with Tomoko, Arai, and Merope.
From there, pick based on your playstyle. Whether you’re into crafting, combat, gardening, or fashion. Oh, and don’t forget to check your stamina before resetting every day. You’ll thank yourself later when you’re not stuck waiting around for that one stat point you needed.
