The June 2025 update introduced the Merge Tactics game mode to Clash Royale. While we believed it was supposed to be Clash Mini’s long-awaited summer arrival, it wasn’t the case. Well, the game mode is pretty interesting, and we have plenty of new things to explore. So, here’s a complete guide to the Merge Tactics Game Mode in Clash Royale.

Introduction and How to Play

So, accessing this game mode is pretty simple. You’ll find it in the new game mode selector menu option next to battle, and once you jump in, your goal is simple: strengthen your team, defeat your opponents, and be the last ruler standing.

You start with your Ruler having 10 hit points. You aim to protect them. In the map, you have grids split into two, so in your half, you can arrange your troops as per your liking. Selecting troops comes up in the shop that is displayed at the bottom of your screen.

Each match is divided into two phases: the Buy Phase and the Battle Phase. During the Buy Phase, you gain elixir each round and use it to get troops from a shop offering three random units. You can tap to summon a unit to your board or drag it, and when you tap it, you can also sell it to the shop.

If you summon two of the same troop with the same star level, they’ll automatically merge into a stronger version. Troops can go all the way up to four stars, increasing their stats significantly each time they merge. Your board can only hold six units, even when the rounds carry on.

Understanding Rulers, Elixir, and Strategy

You start each match by selecting a Ruler. Currently, we have two: the Royal King and Spirit Empress. Each has its skills and bonuses you can get from them.

The Royal King grants +4 elixir every time you lose a round, while The Spirit Empress gives +1 elixir every time you merge units. These rulers can be upgraded to unlock cosmetic effects up to Level 4, but their core gameplay bonuses stay the same.

Elixir management is important here. You gain more each round and use it during the Buy Phase to summon or merge troops. As mentioned earlier, every time you buy a unit, your shop refreshes with a new set of three troops, so you only get one pick per shop.

Just like Rulers, troops also have traits. Each troop will have two of them. Collecting enough of the same trait activates a synergy bonus, which gives your entire team extra effects. Positioning of troops becomes important too, so make sure you know your tanks and long rangers.

Positioning and Battles

The Battle Phase starts automatically after the timer runs out. Your troops will fight on their own, so positioning is crucial. Put your tanky units like P.E.K.K.A or Mega Knight in the front, and you’re ranged attackers like Archer Queen or Dark Goblin in the back.

Matches also include modifiers, which are special rules that affect every player. These can include starting with a free 5-elixir troop or gaining a bonus elixir when a player is eliminated. Modifiers add variety to each match, and there are up to 27 at the time of writing, with the first one unlocking at Bronze II.

Merge Tactics features its own ranked ladder starting at Bronze I. Winning matches earn you medals and unlocks one-time rewards. As you climb higher, you’ll also unlock new modifiers and eventually enter a competitive league at 3,500 medals.
