- Masteries offered good rewards but had a poor design, confused many players, encouraged grinding, and were removed without focusing on some key aspects.
- The removed Mastery rewards tied to new Brawlers will now be added to the Battle Pass starting next update.
- The devs aims to remove early access paywalls starting next update, making future Brawlers free to try and unlockable by playing, moving away from credit banking and IAPs after Trunk.
Brawl Stars recently removed Masteries, which disappointed a lot of players. In response, the developer team has now explained their decision, also admitting they missed the mark. However, they’ve listened well to the community and shared how they’re going to fix these issues.
Masteries were confusing, grind-focused, and their removal missed key rewards
According to the Brawl Stars team, Masteries weren’t working well from a design perspective. Plus, many players didn’t understand how it worked, especially the scaling from Trophies to Mastery points. And as you know, it also pushed us to grind, which the team believes isn’t a fun way to play the game.
The issue occurred when removing Masteries; the devs overlooked a few key things. One was the missing rewards tied to the new Brawlers. The good thing is, these will now be added to the Battle Pass in future updates, as deterministic rewards matching Legendary Brawler.
New early access system will prioritize gameplay over spending, with the coming update
Another key issue they addressed was Credit banking. They don’t want you to feel forced to save rewards just to avoid losing them to Fame. Instead, the team is now changing the early access system to remove paywalls and let you unlock upcoming Brawlers just by playing.
I love this side of Brawl Stars, which is also why I actively play the game, as they always listen to the community. That said, Trunk will be the last early access Brawler behind an IAP, as future ones will be free to try from day one itself. Even better, more rewards and improvements are on the way.
