DARKEST DAYS is an open-world multiplayer zombie survival title from NHN Corp. In an apocalyptic world where hope is dying, you will fight alongside a few for the sake of humanity to survive. Gameplay Overview
You meet Jimmy Hancock, who is in search of his lost wife after the outbreak of the apocalypse, in the early game. As you enter into the post-apocalyptic world for the first time, there’s a page showing “Character Selection“, I think it’s an irony that the game already selects one for you!
Now, you’ve been bitten by a zombie, so the priority is to get an Infection Cure Shot. Find it and complete the first task. And the story continues as you level up, meet new characters, and grow your community. This is how the game takes you inside its broken world.
DARKEST DAYS Gameplay Basics
The game features a lot of options in-game. In case you’re cornered with the pile of things going on at the same time in this game, I’m going to give you a brief of important options. Note that most of these options are part of the Main Menu, which can be accessed from the top right corner.
Skills
Another important feature of the game. I have talked about the importance of upgrading and unlocking new skills in the tips and tricks section. However, you will navigate it from the Main Menu and be able to see the diversity in skills.
These skills require some resources and also higher levels to upgrade. The initial growth is prompt, allowing you to enter deep inside the story quickly. Make sure you visit the page each time a red notification mark appears on top of it.
Bag and Locker System
The game has two types of inventory systems. One is the bag that you always carry, and the other is the locker system. Though the game doesn’t let you carry a decent number of items, it is indeed an essential option for quick use of resources.
Survival titles have this common feature, so you get the idea that the inventory that you carry is more important. So, always check the items and sort them according to your needs.
Main Quest
The Main Quests are easy in the beginning and slightly get harder as you level up in the game. The quests will pop up in the top right corner of the screen. They are simple, a few-minute job, and engaging. You will fly through the first few quests as each quest will introduce a new character.
However, I suggest completing the main quests as fast as possible, as it will unlock all the options, skills, and resources from the Main Menu. Besides, you will also level up faster by playing them. So some Main Quests are first to unlock the necessary features, and then you can explore and earn a few more.
Each community merchant provides trading and repairing of goods. You will find better equipment, gear, and other items from this guy. So, if you are sometimes in need of some rare items and resources, you will get those from him.
But before that, you must increase your friendship level with him. And yes, use the locker to keep the extra items and resources to exchange or trade them later with the merchant.
Map
The map is big and filled with a ton of information in DARKEST DAYS. You will understand the overwhelming number of features once you look at the indicators on the left side. So, it will take some time to get used to it.
But the feature will make your job easy, as whenever you want to find something much needed, you can just look for it on the map, as it shows where to find which loot. It also shows the intelligence/levels of zombies and other threats in an area. So, you won’t want to mess up by going to a place where you won’t survive.
DARKEST DAYS Beginners Guide: Tips and Tricks
While I have spent so much time in this game, I want you to level up and stay focused to win the fights and complete the quests. But you can do it more easily with some tips and tricks. Here are a few of them:
1. Exploring the surroundings is the priority
You may think that exploring your surroundings can put you in uncomfortable situations. But in survival games, your life lasts the longer you gather loot and necessary items. And, you will collect the equipment like food, weapons, ammunition, crafting materials, etc., from the surroundings.
Don’t forget to be cautious, as the zombies are always looking for a mistake and can overwhelm you with their numbers. As you must hold the hope of humanity, life’s important, isn’t it?
2. Understand the role of your Weapons
Your survivability depends on several things, one of which is understanding the role of weapons in this game. You surely don’t want to use AR Rifles inside a room. So, the basic rule is to use small arms inside closed doors or in close-quarter fights, preferably in final touches or early fights when zombies are near.
Shotguns, on the other hand, are the dope weapons, so use them in close battle when zombies are in large numbers. But in times when you’re pinned down and the zombie flood won’t stop, you can use throwables to clear a small area.
3. Keep upgrading your Skills
Skills are one of the important aspects for your survival. From the top right corner, you will navigate the Menu and enter the skills section. There are several skills shown in the set, important for survival in ways like health, weapons, looting, and ability etc.
Always try to unlock or upgrade a skill just after you become capable of learn it. If you have enough resources or levels to learn new skills, do it first. It will keep you ahead of the zombies and increase your ability to survive.
4. Residents are not just NPCs
Well, they are NPCs! But they will help you so much that you will forget you’re being assisted by an NPC. Do one thing first: get a companion as soon as you unlock them. Do not forget to upgrade them or level them up. They’re super useful in tough scenarios when you badly need help.
An upgraded resident will kill for you (I’m not sure if they die!) and take you out of a crowded zone. You can keep one resident with you, always. If your resident is leveled up, they can carry higher and advantageous weapons and also deal higher damage.
Choose one and upgrade it often so you don’t end up stuck in a situation where you need to spend more time in-game to upgrade them all. I always prefer to select one and use it in most scenarios.
5. Do not go beyond your limits
Before engaging a mob, make sure that you can win or get out of the situation most efficiently. Otherwise, it will go in vain and your spent time will have no value.
Always take fights that you can win, meaning that you should take fights equal to your capacity or levels. It will ensure that you’re getting out with the highest XP possible from a quest, whether it is main or side.
6. Events are always a great way to increase Inventory
The game is coming with many events and updates so often that growing becomes easier than when it was first launched. After level 5 or so, you will be able to see the event page from the top right corner, beside the Mail Icon.
Look for the events regularly as they bring you several resources and easy missions. If you think that in-game growth is getting tougher, these events will come in to save you.
Final Thoughts
While the game is quite fun, it has some issues as well. The gameplay, BGM, and a few other factors may bother you. However, if you’ve made up your mind and decided to continue further, these tips and tricks will guide you through the early stages.
