Weekly Cup Competitions
Week of May 12 – May 18

by Wax

The week of May 12-18 saw Classic continue his rise as a weekly cup powerhouse, winning WardiTV Mondays for the second week straight. MaxPax recovered from a brief dry spell in the PiGosaur Cup winning his first cup since April. However, it was still king Clem who took the biggest non-GSL prize of the week, going undefeated in WardiTV’s May monthly event.

Unfortunately, the grassroots competitive scene faced some bad news, with the crowdfunded Monday Night Weeklies skipping an event due to lack of funds. While the cup will return for the May 19th edition, it was cause for mild concern about the successor tournament to ESL EU weeklies.

May 12: WardiTV Mondays #35

For the second straight week, WardiTV Mondays was the stage for big upsets. And, for the second straight week, (Wiki)Classic and MaNa were at the center of it all.

On the back of his finals victory against herO in cup #34, Classic took down the scene’s other PvP powerhouse MaxPax to go back-to-back. After dropping the first map against the clandestine Dane, Classic fired back by winning a Phoenix war, followed by two successful all-ins against MaxPax’s fast expands (VOD).

As for MaNa, he followed last week’s upset over MaxPax with another huge win over Clem. MaNa came back from a 0-1 deficit, first tying the series after a hectic basetrade, and then sealing his victory by deflecting Clem’s recklessly aggressive play (VOD).

May 13: PiGosaur Cup #31

(Wiki)MaxPax ended his brief run of under-par cup play with a 3-1 victory over Solar in PiGosaur Cup #31. After losing game one to a Stalker-Storm timing while playing a standard Hive tech strategy, Solar opted into different mid-game all-ins for the rest of the series. While he did manage to take one point, MaxPax’s resolute defense won him the next two maps (VOD).

May 17: Korean StarCraft League #75

The biweekly KSL title went to (Wiki)ByuN, who gave Solar his second runner-up finish of the week in another 3-1 finals. While three of the games were your standard TvZ fare, ByuN did raise some eyebrows by winning with battlemech in game one (VOD). Perhaps he was inspired by GuMiho’s recent mech play against Reynor in the GSL?

May 10-18: WardiTV May

After ramping down his cup play recently, (Wiki)Clem reminded us he’s still the top online player when the prize pool ramps up. The French Terran took the $1250 WardiTV May tournament with a perfect run, going 6-0 in matches and 12-0 in maps.

With apologies to herO, his playoff run showed us why he still has a case to be called the best TvP player on both sides of the match-up, swapping between both races to sweep Spirit, ByuN, and MaxPax (VOD (Playoffs)).
