Possession Game has been one of the most important tactics in eFootball 2025, with the best formations popping up ever since passing received a good boost in the previous updates. Since then, players with good passing skills have been a good fit to keep the ball and move around, which in turn is helping players to score more goals.
But to make this playstyle really work, you need the right formation. In this article, I’ll share the top 5 best formations that suit the Possession Game, how they work, and why they’re great for keeping control of the match in eFootball 2025.
Okay, here are five good choices for the Possession Style.
1) 4-3-3
Here’s an easy choice for any player. Flat 4-3-3 still remains a solid option, especially when there were complaints regarding the game not supporting wing play. Yes, some dribbling abilities might help you, but if you know how to hold and pass the ball, you can boss any formation or tactic with this one.
The basics of this formation would be to have a working midfield. I’m suggesting all three midfielders to have decent passing, especially one CMF should have the 90s range, in case your forward is far and making a run already.

Ideally, use an Anchor Man in the middle to dictate play, supported by a Box-to-Box and an Orchestrator on either side. One would say to play a more offensive CMF playstyle like the Hole Player/Creative Playmaker, but since you already have players dropping down to collect, it won’t be an issue.
At the back, you can go with two Build Up center-backs or maybe a mix too. Fullbacks again have a good mix of defense/offense. Slap in a Roaming Flank/Hole Player winger + Prolific Winger combo with a Goal Poacher, it works brilliantly well. You can keep Counter Attack instruction on the striker to quickly feed balls.
2) 4-2-3-1
Another ‘boring’ formation but trust me, 4-2-3-1 still works wonders. The double pivot in midfield, typically a combination of Anchor Man and Orchestrator/Destroyer (the 2nd for aggressive ball winning), basically makes a strong 6-man backline scenario, where the rest four can easily push for goal.
The attacking midfielder becomes the creative link here, so slap him with the Anchoring instruction, since if he drifts wider, his options are limited. Instead, use a Roaming Flank to cut inside to have another creative option. Try having good backups for them since they will be on the ball most of the time.

The lone striker can either hold up play or run behind, so that’s why either a Target Man or a Fox In The Box would be a solid choice, a good mix of heading and finishing. Don’t forget to give the player the One Touch Pass skill.
For the defence, you can have a similar setup to that for a 4-3-3, although one side keep an offensive fullback to create overlaps and generate more crossing into the box.
3) 3-4-2-1
A more offense-heavy formation this time around. It suits players who love to keep the ball and play through the middle. Your CBs should include two Build Up types to ensure safe passing from the back, while another one should be a Destroyer.

Use Offensive Fullbacks or Cross Specialists as wide midfielders, as they stretch the play but also serve as part of your passing network. In midfield, an Anchor Man pairs well with a Box-to-Box, basically 4-atb but with B2B having a more defensive duty, someone like Germany Matthaus or Valverde would perfectly fit the profile.
To maintain shape, you can assign Anchoring to one of these midfielders. Up front, use a Creative Playmaker or Classic No. 10 behind a lone striker, preferably a Fox in the Box or Goal Poacher. Since you lack traditional wide forwards, keep your attacking midfielders on Offensive instruction.
4) 4-3-1-2
You might have thought, finally, a 2-Striker formation! Well, I find a lone striker good enough to score goals, but 4-3-1-2 Diamond, even a 4-4-2, is a strong option to play possession football. For now, I’ll stick to the 4-3-1-2 since I’ve been using it frequently.
The 3+1 midfield is a barrage of tight passing and central overloads. However, you can make this more offensive though, that AMF can be an SS. The top 3 can be either of the two combinations: Poacher + Deep Lying Forward + Hole Player/Creative Playmaker or FITB + Hole Player + Dummy Runner, but as SS.

Both combinations work, although a lot of stress with be on your midfield in the second case. Hence, two midfielders must be good in defending. I usually use the Destroyer + Anchor Man combo in the midfield. Box-to-Box must be more of a technical player.
Since you don’t have wide midfielders, your Offensive Fullbacks must push high to add width and stretch defenses, else you will struggle without passing options. To fill that defensive gap, give Defensive instructions to your DMF and one CMF. You can also add Deep Line instruction on the DMF, 3-atb while attacking which transitions to 5-atb during defense.
5) 4-1-4-1
This is my eFootball take on Pep’s tactics during his UCL 23 winning run, although you can also call it a 3-2-4-1 during the attack with the right instructions. Again, DMF is important, where Anchor Man is on the left side to hold position. Make sure he is a ball-winning mid.

A Box-to-Box or an Orchestrator on the right to push into space and support the attack. Now the backline can have three CBs and one offensive RB, whose space during attack is covered by the double pivot upfront. So with the Offensive Fullback or Fullback Finisher playstyles, you effectively have 5 on the attack now.
You’ll want your wingers as wide as possible to stretch the defense, so you can have one Prolific Winger at winger position, or have a Cross Specialist in the midfield itself. A Creative Playmaker is also a choice you can go ahead with. For the striker and AMF, Goal Poacher + Hole Player should be your choice.
