In the early 1990s, Marvel Comics used to release multiple spin-off comics. These comics used to consist of various heroes from the Marvel Universe. To maintain the lore, these stories were initially set in alternate realities or within a different multiverse. Within Marvel Rivals, we have already seen some of these variants of heroes get some of the best skins in the game.
A significant reason for this was to make sure that they could showcase more personality and traits of some of the characters. These spinoff series featured multiple heroes, including Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, Emma Frost, and many more. A while back, we got to see Mr. Barnes’ skin for Black Widow, which was about the 1872 spinoff comic.
The Marvel Swimsuit Special was an annual one-shot that was released. The comic special ran from 1991 until 1995. Within this, fans could see their favorite heroes in beach attire. In a recent announcement, Marvel revealed that MARVEL SWIMSUIT SPECIAL: FRIENDS, FOES & RIVALS #1 will be available worldwide in July 2025.
The reason the Marvel Swimsuit Special was released in the 90s was that beach culture was at the center of pop culture at the time. When the X-Men comic was released in 1991, it featured an iconic double-page photo of all the X-Men gathered around a pool. Some of the X-Men have multiple skins as well, already in Marvel Rivals.
Which Heroes Can Receive The Exclusive Skins?

In the poster launched for the 2025 edition of Marvel Swimsuit Special, there are specific hints. Hints to tell us which Hero might be receiving a skin. According to the poster, it is believed that Black Widow, Spider-Man, Psylocke, Black Panther, and Iron Man will be receiving new skins. This is due to their being present in the cover photo of the announcement.
As the first issue of the Marvel Swimsuit Special is scheduled to release in July, one can expect these skins to be available in Marvel Rivals around that time. It won’t be wrong to believe that we might also see an in-game event to unlock various cosmetics within the game. As it will be a part of a collaboration, the prices and rarity of these skins could be the highest in the game.
Recently, Marvel Rivals announced new skins for Doctor Strange and Penny Parker that take references from their roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
