To answer the burning question straight off the bat, yes, Doom: The Dark Ages is a prequel to the critically acclaimed Doom game back in 2016, the game that really put this franchise amongst the very best games at the time, after rebooting the beloved shooter that was established in the early 2000s. The franchise has felt a bit stale since the release of Doom Eternal, failing to really capture the magic that made these games special to begin with.

Players want gore, heavy metal, and so much action that it’ll keep you coming back for more time and time again. From the trailer, we can see that heavy metal is once again at the forefront of this shooter game, and that’s how it should be. The developers don’t need to reinvent the wheel with this game, they just need to make a game that remains true to what brought Doom to the forefront in the first place.

The game is going to follow the protagonist everyone knows and loves, the Doom Slayer, following their journey towards becoming the last hope, fighting against the forces of hell in what is going to be a techno-medieval setting. It’s a good sign when the game is heavily based around these settings. They have been alluded to in the past, but it seems Doom: The Dark Ages fully embraces the spin medieval.
