Players can show off their design skills by building in The Sims 4. Because Build Mode is versatile, creating houses, venues, and community lots is one of the best parts of the life simulation for builders.
Players can create their own designs or take inspiration from real-life architecture. Adding a deck is a great way to give a building dimension and more space for Sims to enjoy. Here’s a complete guide showing how to build decks and porches in The Sims 4.

How to Build a Deck in The Sims 4
Whenever simmers start a new household, they can build a house from scratch or renovate one of the pre-made houses. Build/Buy mode can be accessed by clicking on the tools icon at the top right side of the screen. From here, players can build walls and floors and buy furniture to fill out their lots.
Build is where players find walls, floors, roofs, and decks. Decks are under the Walls and Empty Rooms category. There are several types of decks in The Sims 4, including:
- Triangular Deck
- Square Deck
- L-Shaped Deck
- Octagonal Deck
- Rounded Deck (Large, X-Large)
- Square Deck (Diagonal)
Players can place them directly on the ground or on top of a foundation. To add a foundation, click on a room and drag the upward arrow. This will push the entire lot upwards.
Sims need stairs to get into places built on foundations.
If placed against a wall, decks will slot against a house. They can also be placed on the front of the home if players want it to act as a front porch. Decks can then be customized with foundations, fences, and pillars.
Decks can also be built over bodies of water, including ponds, and those with the Island Living Expansion Pack can build decks over the ocean if they have beachfront properties. Players can watch the video below to see various ways to build a deck in The Sims 4:
How to Build a Wrap-Around Porch
Wrap-around porches are perfect additions to farmhouses and other larger structures. Players can make them modern or classic-looking.
- Place a deck across the front of a house.
- Pull the deck so it goes further than the wall.
- Use the arrow to extend the deck around the building.
- Add pillars across the deck to look like support beams. The height of the pillars can be lowered and raised to match the height of the walls.
- To cover the porch, go to the second floor and build a room over the deck area.
- Knock down the walls and the ceiling with the hammer, and the floor will remain.
- Use flooring to make the porch cover match.
Players can decorate wrap-around porches with benches, plants, and other clutter items.
How to Build a Deck with a Pool
Players can also build decks around pools in The Sims 4. However, things get a little tricky when placing pools. First, players must place the deck. Then, they add the pool using the placement tool or one of the pre-made pool shapes. Finally, players can add pool borders to make them look more cohesive.
Pools can’t be built on stilt foundations.
Pool decor and water effects can also be added to make pools look unique. Players can also add pool floats and ladders to give their Sims pool activities.
