Players of Devil May Cry 5 can expect 21 main missions to take on, telling the story of Dante, Nero, and V as they take on the Demon Urizen and his Qliphoth Tree. From the streets of Redgrave City, to the inner reaches of the Qliphoth Tree itself, there’s quite a lot of ground to cover.
Devil May Cry 5 also features 12 secret missions, accessible via portals hidden inside the main missions. These missions reward you with blue orb fragments when completed, allowing you to increase your vitality. If you beat them as any of the three main characters (Dante, Nero, and V), beating them again as Vergil will grant a gold orb.

Devil May Cry 5 has reached its five year milestone, and praises should be sung for just how well the title holds up in its design approach.
All Main Missions in Devil May Cry 5
Prologue
In the Prologue, we run through the Qliphoth interior as Nero, culminating in a fight against Urizen that the player is supposed to lose. It is possible to win if you’re particularly good with Nero and/or come back with more skills unlocked, leading to a comically anticlimactic alternate ending.
Mission 01: Nero
This mission has Nero, now with his shiny new Devil Breaker Arms, fighting his way into Redgrave City by crossing a collapsed bridge. It culminates in a boss fight against the Qliphoth Roots, which can be damaged by attacking the giant blood clot at its center.
Mission 02: Qliphoth
In this mission, Nero continues into the city, traversing the streets and taking a shortcut through a hotel before ultimately arriving at a church. The boss fight here, Goliath, is a hulking monster who primarily uses melee attacks.
Mission 03: Flying Hunter
In this mission, Nero continues deeper into the city, navigating over a flooded area and into the sewers. Eventually exiting into a library and facing off with Death Scissors, Nero’s final foe in this mission is Artemis, a demon with powerful ranged attacks who constantly hovers around the arena.
Mission 04: V
Taking a break from Nero, this mission has players controlling V, who fights using three familiars based on bosses from the original Devil May Cry. Acting as a tutorial for V’s gameplay, this mission ends with a fight against Nidhogg, a demon/parasite inhabiting the Qlippoth Roots.
Mission 05: The Devil Sword Sparda
Continuing further as V, he is forced underground by a huge demon and must navigate further into the city, ultimately facing the Elder Geryon Knight and overhearing a useful clue about the Devil Sword Sparda.
Mission 06: Steel Impact
This level is a boss-only stage where Nero faces off against Gilgamesh, the huge metal demon that forced V underground earlier.
Mission 07: United Front
In this mission, players choose between V and Nero to continue navigating the ruined city. Each character gets their own path through the level, before ultimately converging on the boss fight with Proto Angelo & Scudo Angelo.
Mission 08: Demon King
In this mission, Nero finally makes his way back inside the Qliphoth Tree for a rematch with Urizen. After fighting all the way back to the boss room, you’ll have to fight until Nero shatters Urizen’s crystal this time, though it’s still a fight you’re meant to lose. Once again, beating him outright here will trigger a different ending.
Mission 09: Genesis
Set at the same time as the previous mission, players control V as he searches for Dante and the Devil Sword Sparda, fighting a group of three demons called “Nobodies” at the end of the fight.
Mission 10: Awaken
In this mission, we finally get control of Dante as we play through the opening of the game from his perspective. After getting to grips with Dante’s playstyle, we fight Urizen again. There are no secret endings here, but the fight will end once the crystal is shattered or after 30 seconds have passed.
Mission 11: Reason
Awakening from his lengthy nap, Dante carves a path through Redgrave City to face off against Cavaliere Angelo. This boss fight is best handled by parrying, and it also looks much more satisfying when you parry it.
Mission 12: Yamato
In this mission, Dante makes his way to his old family home, and in the vague direction of the Qliphoth tree. After reaching his home and unlocking a new power, we fight Urizen once more.
Mission 13: Three Warriors
In this mission you can pick from any of the three main characters, descending through the Qliphoth to follow Urizen. This is a huge collection of arenas and group fights with no boss at the end, so pick your favorite character and go to town.
Mission 14: Diverging Point: V
In V’s final mission, you’ll be facing off with three previous bosses: Goliath, Artemis, and Cavaliere Angelo. V’s familiars are taken from him and must be recovered one at a time, so it’s best to get Shadow back first to unlock your melee combos.
Mission 15: Diverging Point: Nero
This mission catches up with Nero as he descends deeper to the Qliphoth, eventually reuniting with V and facing off against the demon Malphas. Malphas is a dangerous witch fused to a bird who uses their spellcasting ability to teleport around and attack from strange angles.
Mission 16: Diverging Point: Dante
Meanwhile, with Dante, this mission has him moving deeper into the Qliphoth and facing off with King Cerberus, a brutal boss that wields three different elements to attack.
Mission 17: Brothers
This mission stars Dante once again, in another boss-only stage. This time, Dante will be fighting Urizen one final time, and we can empty his entire health bar this time around without ending the game. He’s stronger and faster than before, of course, but Dante’s more than capable of handling it.
Mission 18: Awakening
As the first mission after Vergil’s return, Awakening has Dante navigating the upper branches of the Qliphoth and fighting V’s familiars in an effort to reach his brother.
Mission 19: Vergil
In mission 19, Dante faces off with Vergil in a clash for the ages, testing everything you’ve learned so far as you face off with a deadly and nimble opponent. In Vergil Mode, you’ll instead face off against Dante during this mission.
Mission 20: True Power
Mission 20 has Nero go up against his father in the final battle of the game, facing Vergil’s lightning-fast moveset with his own abilities. Alternatively, Vergil’s mission 20 has him fighting Dante, who will now wield every weapon in his arsenal including the Sin Devil Trigger.
All Secret Missions in Devil May Cry 5
Secret Mission 01 – Eliminate all of the demons
The first Secret Mission, which acts as a tutorial to the Secret Mission System, can be found inside the hotel during Mission 2. To clear it, you just need to defeat all of the demons, which is pretty simple compared to the later Secret Missions.
Secret Mission 02 – Don’t let any Red Empusa escape!
Found in the underground tunnels during mission 3, you’ll need to take down every last Red Empusa before they can escape to clear this one. Keep an eye on them and make sure to interrupt their tunneling escape animation by dealing damage to them, and you’ll be able to clear this one in no time.
Secret Mission 03 – Collect all of the Red Orbs.
Found during mission 4, you just have to speed through all of the red orbs to grab them and clear the stage, which is best accomplished by V riding Shadow, since it will allow him to break most objects he rides into while trying to nab the orbs.
Secret Mission 04 – Eliminate all of the demons without taking a hit.
Found during Mission 5, this secret mission tasks players with taking out every last demon without taking a hit. Fortunately, you’re playing as V, who doesn’t need to be up close to deal damage, so it should be a little easier to dodge attacks while dealing damage.
Secret Mission 05 – Get to the goal without touching the ground.
During Mission 8, you can enter this secret mission by using platforms rising up a lava flow. This mission tasks players with a platforming challenge utilizing grim grips, which is fairly straightforward once you get into a rhythm of shooting the grips in mid-air to activate them, and then grappling them.
Secret Mission 06 – Eliminate all of the demons in 20 seconds or less.
During Mission 9, you can find this mission by taking a left after the second mandatory fight and using Nightmare in the area near a blue orb fragment to break open a path. Inside the secret mission itself you’ll have 20 seconds to eliminate every single demon, so take full advantage of V’s devil trigger gauge with either Royal Fork or Nightmare to crush them all as fast as possible.
Secret Mission 07 – Aim for their weak point and take them down with a single bullet.
Accessed in Mission 10 after the first hellbat fight, you’ll need to rush through a pulsating red door before it closes to find your way into this secret. You’ll be facing death scissors, and you have to take them out with a single bullet, but luckily, there’s a trick to this. Break their guard by hitting them as their scissors glow white, right before an attack, and wait a moment for a red glow to appear around their head. Once the glow appears, shoot them once for a critical strike.
Secret Mission 08 – Maintain an S Stylish Rank.
During Mission 11, climb back up after destroying the first blood clot to find this mission. Your goal here is to maintain an S-Rank for the entire fight, so get off to a strong start by using the air taunt to set yourself to SS-rank, and then utilize your preferred variable combos to keep that meter rising until the fight is done.
Secret Mission 09 – Stay in the air for more than 15 seconds.
You’ll need to track this one down in Mission 12, in the area right after Dante says “This Takes Me Back.” You need to climb up to the top and then look back in the direction you came from to find the mission entrance. This mission requires you to stay in the air for 15 seconds or longer, so you’ll need to use Enemy Step and melee attacks with Cavaliere and gunshots to stay airborne. You can also cheese it using Sin Devil Trigger and Air Raid.
Secret Mission 10 – Get to the goal without touching the ground.
This mission is found after defeating the three mirage bosses in mission 14. After you destroy the bloodclots to open the path forward, head back to where the first bloodclot was to find this mission. If you have the Promotion ability, you can ride Nightmare to achieve the objective easily, or you can use Shadow’s speed to launch yourself off the starting platform with a jump, and then use Griffon for more distance, before using Gambit to teleport the rest of the way.
Secret Mission 11 – Head straight for the goal!
In Mission 15, head behind the first divinity statue to find a path leading to a blue orb. Use Punchline to reach it, then drop to the right and head northeast to find your way to the secret mission. This mission is another “get to the goal” objective, with a tight time limit. Most of it is straightforward, but have punchline and a double jump ready to help you deal with the platforms that move down at the end.
Secret Mission 12 – Collect a set amount of Red Orbs.
The last Secret Mission can be found during Mission 16, and requires you to gain 800 Red Orbs by beating up one Empusa. You’ll be able to manage this more easily if you use a fully upgraded Set Hat skill from the Dr Faust Weapon, allowing you to repeatedly force the Empusa to wear a hat and spill tons of orbs when hit with any other weapon.
