While many Naruto fans didn’t like Boruto when it was first released, the series has taken an interesting path and masterfully expanded the lore of the franchise, with the Otsutsuki clan as the main antagonists of the story.
In Boruto, we learn that this clan is even worse than we could grasp in Naruto, but there are still many questions that remain unanswered. After all, who exactly are the Otsutsuki and what are their true goals?

Naruto: Why Momoshiki Otsutsuki Is Underrated
Momoshiki Otsutsuki is often underrated as a villain in Naruto, but his strategic mind, power, and impact on Boruto’s story make him a key threat.
Who Are The Otsutsuki Clan in Naruto and Boruto?
The Otsutsuki Clan are actually aliens (humanoid aliens, in this case) who travel around the universe in pairs to cultivate Divine Trees (also known as God Trees) to produce a Chakra Fruit, which is then eaten by one of them, unleashing great new powers.
For this reason, the Otsutsuki are often mistaken for divine creators, but it’s actually quite the opposite. The Divine Tree, named this way because it was believed to be responsible for all life on Earth, actually absorbs the chakra (and genes) of living beings until the planet is completely dead. The Otsutsuki don’t seem to care that they have to destroy planets and many lifeforms to become stronger, which makes them some kind of parasitic colonizers.
The Ten Tails serve as seedlings for Divine Trees, meaning that the Otsutsuki plant Ten Tails on planets they want to harvest. In Boruto, things get even worse as the Divine Trees evolve and become humanoids, with the chakra of those they have absorbed — these “human Divine Trees” are led by Jura (who is the incarnation of Ten Tails).
Kaguya’s lineage on Earth later branched off itto the Uzumaki, Uchiha, Hyuuga and Senju clans. We don’t know if something similar happened on another planet.
Why We Need To Learn More About Them
Boruto expands the lore of the Otsutsuki clan, making them the main antagonists of the series — the series delves deeper into what happened to Isshiki Otsutsuki after Kaguya tried to kill him. However, there are still many mysteries surrounding them.
For example, as far as we know, Kaguya Otsutsuki was originally a low-ranking (or at least weak) member of the clan. She came to Earth with Isshiki, and she wasn’t supposed to eat the Chakra Fruit — actually, she was supposed to serve as a sacrifice. However, she betrayed Isshiki and ate the fruit. This alone leads to many questions, such as what the dynamics of the clan are and how they choose those who will go to each planet.
Was Isshiki originally supposed to eat the fruit, or would he just take it to someone else? Kaguya didn’t follow the plan, but it took them centuries to investigate what happened to her, which makes it seem like Kaguya’s mission was secondary to their priorities. Momoshiki, a member of the main family, finally comes to Earth in search of her, and then attempts to create a new Divine Tree with Naruto’s chakra, which actually makes it look like they want a Chakra Fruit from Earth (or else, he could have just left and gone somewhere else).
You poor inconvenient humans. Unless you train and persevere senselessly, you get nowhere. Watch me! With this pill, instantly, with no effort, and so easily, I acquire true power.
Furthermore, where does the Otsutsuki come from? How did they learn about the Divine Trees and the Chakra Fruit? Do they just travel from planet to planet to become immortal, or do they have another goal? Many things about the true origins of this clan are still a mystery, and it’s hard to believe that they are the only race in the universe that is able travel between planets (although they could have just killed every other planet with intelligent and strong beings).
Since the clan is getting the spotlight in Boruto, it would be the perfect time to delve even deeper into their origins and mysteries and, who knows, into any possible “universe politics” that might involve the existence of other alien races.
