The Last of Us Season 2 has just received a glowing reception from critics. But among the overwhelmingly positive comments, there are a few critiques of the overall structure of this upcoming season. Critiques which may suggest that fans are not going to get a complete story this time round.

The Last of Us TV show is HBO’s new critical and commercial darling, staking its claim as one of the finest video game adaptations ever made. It’s undeniable that this program has lit a fire within the hearts and minds of long-running fans of the original games and new audiences who’ve come to love Ellie and Joel’s journey. Much like the first video game, Part I, the first season of the television show was a tight-knit, consistent, and satisfying piece of storytelling. From start to finish, it told a complete set of character arcs that captured the tone of its dystopian, bittersweet world. If the show had been canceled after Season 1, then fans of the series would’ve been upset, but no loose threads would be left hanging in the air. That may not be the case for Season 2’s ending.

However, taking a closer look at some of the critics’ comments, viewers may find that there are some early warning signs that Season 2 will be leaving audiences on a cliffhanger.

A Cliffhanger For The Last of Us Season 2 Will Leave Audiences Agonizing Over The Fate Of Its Characters

Critics on Rotten Tomatoes have flooded the score rating with praise. Joonatan Itkonen lauded Season 2 for continuing The Last of Us’ reputation for quality storytelling: “Season 2 of The Last of Us improves upon its source material in every conceivable way. It is the best game adaptation ever made, and then some.” This reflects much of the discourse around the upcoming season so far. Many have speculated that, like in the video game sequel Part II, fans of the franchise will be in for greater scares, larger battles, and more devastating heartbreak. Season 2 boasts about being bigger in every conceivable way. Graeme Guttmann comments that the sequel has:

“Bigger action, higher stakes, and more emotion than Season 1”

Reviewers have honed in on Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey’s performances as a major driving force behind the show’s success. But beneath all of this celebratory feedback, there are a couple of worrying signs that fans may have to wait until Season 3 to finish some of Season 2’s storylines. Belen Edwards asks the question:

“It’s just one half of a great story — is that enough?”

This comment may support the speculation that the story of Part II will be split across multiple future seasons. It makes sense, as the sequel game’s narrative is far more vast, splitting off into three distinct sections: Ellie’s story, Abbie’s story, and then an eventual epilogue. From the trailers and information audiences have received so far, it seems Season 2 will be focusing on Ellie’s journey. But if fans are only about to receive one aspect of Part II’s story, viewers may be left feeling that this upcoming slate of episodes was incomplete, in a way that Season 1 wasn’t. Kelly Lawler warns fans that the post-show blues after the finale may affect the overall experience of Season 2:

“It’s hard not to finish the [second] season without feeling somewhat dissatisfied.”

Fans will have to tune into Season 2 of The Last of Us on the 13th April to review this treasured series for themselves.
