Predicting Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Professor

As more information is being revealed about Pokemon Legends: Z-A, fans are starting to be introduced to the game’s cast of characters. While Pokemon Legends: Z-A has confirmed that AZ is returning in a new role, alongside new characters like rivals Urbain and Taunie, and Quasartico’s Jett and Vinnie, there is one important character that remains missing. It’s more than likely that Pokemon Legends: Z-A will feature a professor character to guide the player on their journey, but who that character is has yet to be announced.

Pokemon professors are a staple of the franchise, with each region having its own top scholar to teach new trainers about the world of Pokemon and send them on their journey to complete the Pokedex. Some professors may not be as iconic as Professor Oak, but each plays an important role in their respective game’s story. With Pokemon Legends: Arceus introducing players to Professor Laventon early on, it’s odd that Pokemon Legends: Z-A has not introduced its professor by now.

The Most Likely Candidates for Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Professor

Sycamore is Rumored to Be Out as Professor

Despite being the Kalos Region’s professor in Pokemon X and Y, recent story rumors for Pokemon Legends: Z-A suggest that Sycamore no longer heads the region’s research. With Pokemon Legends: Z-A bringing back Mega Evolution, it seems strange that Professor Sycamore wouldn’t return to further research his area of expertise. However, the clear advantage Legends: Z-A gains by moving on from Sycamore as the game’s professor is the chance to elevate another established character into this new role.

Clemont Could Advance His Research in a New Position

With Pokemon Legends: Z-A set in the modern day, over 10 years after the events of Pokemon X and Y, the door is open for one of the younger characters from the Gen 6 games to have grown into the role of the region’s new professor. Of all the potential candidates from X and Y, the Lumiose City Gym Leader Clemont seems like a solid candidate. Clemont is the Electric-type Gym Leader of the Kalos Region, and his interest in scientific advancement would make him more than qualified to balance his love of innovation and Pokemon as the successor to Professor Sycamore.

What’s more is that Clemont’s home is already within Lumiose City, so it would make sense for him to appear in a game set entirely within his hometown. Clemont wouldn’t have to worry about leaving his Gym Leader duties behind as a professor either, as his little sister Bonnie would likely be old enough to take over the role. As both Clemont and Bonnie will have grown by the time Pokemon Legends: Z-A takes place, it seems natural that they would earn new roles within the Kalos Region.

Professor Sycamore’s assistants, Dexio and Sina, could also make good professor candidates, but they appear to be traveling the world after appearing in the Alola Region in Pokemon Sun and Moon.

One of Pokemon X and Y’s Many Rivals May Have Taken Over the Role

Although controversial among Pokemon X and Y players, the large cast of rivals the game features could give Pokemon Legends: Z-A the pick of the lot for a new professor. There are four rivals in the Gen 6 games that have the potential to be Legends: Z-A‘s Pokemon professor, such as Calem or Serena, the main rival that represents the gendered player character not chosen, or one of Trevor, Tierno, and Shauna. While Calem and Serena have the most battle experience among the group, it may be hard to pick one of the two to be the new professor unless they jointly share the position.

Out of the three unique characters, Trevor seems the most likely to take on the new professor role. He is notable among the group of rivals for being the one most focused on completing the Pokedex, going so far as to claim that he will be the first out of the group to do so, meaning he already has a clear interest in studying Pokemon. Tierno is more focused on his dancing career than on studying the creatures, and Shauna lacks a clear goal in Pokemon X and Y, leaving Trevor as the most likely rival to potentially inherit the professorship.
