Nintendo Switch 2 Pre-Orders Delayed In Canada Due To Tariffs

Summary

  • Pre-orders for the Switch 2 have been delayed indefinitely in Canada.
  • This follows an identical delay in the United States due to Donald Trump’s tariffs.
  • The pricing of the Nintendo Switch 2 remains controversial.

Nintendo has released a statement confirming that pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 will be delayed from April 9 to an unknown date in Canada. This has been done to align with the pre-order date in the United States, which was delayed due to Donald Trump’s global trade tariffs and the resulting “evolving market conditions” (thanks, MobileSyrup).

“Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in Canada will not start on April 9, 2025, to align with the timing of pre-orders to be determined in the United States,” the statement reads. “Nintendo will provide updated information at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025, is unchanged.”

This follows an announcement last week that the pre-order date in the United States would be delayed “in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions.” Prospective Canadian Switch 2 buyers hoping to avoid being dragged down by their United States counterparts will be sorely disappointed by this news.

Trump’s administration placed a 24 per cent tariff on imports from Japan. The tariffs have been described as “disastrous” by Japanese economic analysts, and prime minister Shigeru Ishiba has called the current situation a “national crisis.” However, there could still be hope for a swift resolution as Japan has reportedly secured priority tariff negotiations with the United States.

Although observers suspected the Switch 2’s hefty price tag of $449.99 was partially due to the tariffs, Nintendo then revealed the tariffs had not been priced in yet. This means there’s a chance the Switch 2 could cost even more in markets like the United States because of the tariffs on imports from Japan, China and Vietnam, three countries involved in the production of the Switch 2.

It’s not only the pricing of the console that has attracted controversy. Mario Kart World’s substantial price tag of $80 makes it $10 more expensive than the most expensive original Switch game, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The $10 pricing of the Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour, essentially a tech demo, has also turned heads.
