Daemons of the Shadow Realm, a manga that has been serialized since 2021, is supposedly the next one of Arakawa’s works to be animated, and comes after the airing of the anime adaptation of her 2006 autobiographical manga, Noble Farmer, back in 2022, as well as her involvement in the production of the upcoming Spring 2025 sci-fi anime title, Moonrise, produced by WIT Studio.
As no staff, cast or other production information has been revealed as yet, the Daemons of the Shadow Realm anime adaptation remains unconfirmed.

What’s Daemons of the Shadow Realm?
Not THAT Shadow Realm
Yomi no Tsugai (lit. ‘The Hinge of the Underworld’), known in English as Daemons of the Shadow Realm, is a supernatural adventure manga created by Fullmetal Alchemist author Hiromu Arakawa. The story follows fraternal twins Asa and Yuru, children born to rule over supernatural entities known as “Daemons” as the Children Who Sunder Day and Night”. However, they are not told the truth of their birth, and, one day, their village is attacked by an unknown group of mercenaries who come looking for Yuru. As it turns out, the leader of this group is none other than Yuru’s twin, Yuru, despite the fact that Asa has grown up alongside, albeit separately from, his sister Asa.
‘Ghosts’, ‘Yokai’, ‘Monsters’, ‘Demons’, ‘Aliens’… ‘The Opposites’… Well, people call them by a lot of different names.

It has been serialized in Square Enix’s shōnen manga magazine, Monthly Shōnen Gangan, since December 2021, and has 9 volumes so far. In July 2022, Square Enix Manga & Books announced that they would be licensing the series for release in English, with the 8th volume expected for release in July. Daemons of the Shadow Realm has enjoyed positive reception and has either been nominated for, won, or come close to winning several awards in its run. Some of the accolades include:
- 1st Rakuten Kobo E-book Manga Award – “I Want to Read it Now!” Category [2023].
- 7th Tsutaya Comic Award Grand Prize [2023].
- Runner-Up: 17th Manga Taishō [2024]
- Nominated: 48th Kodansha Manga Award – Shōnen Category.
At this point, there’s no definitive reports of the anime adaptation of the series; however, the reception to the rumours has been excitement, given Arakawa’s reputation among anime fans who are well aware of the mangaka’s storytelling prowess. Hopefully, these rumours will turn out to be true, especially as we usher in a new generation of shōnen anime and manga.
