Final Fantasy 9 Remake Announcement Teased By Square Enix

Summary

  • Square Enix has potentially teased a Final Fantasy 9 remake in a social media post.
  • The post featured a famous quote from the character Vivi.
  • Fans are desperate for an official announcement.

Square Enix has re-ignited the hopes of Final Fantasy 9 fans after making a social media post that features a quote from the ending sequence of Final Fantasy 9.

The X (formerly Twitter) post features an image that reads “My memories will be part of the sky” is a quote spoken by the character Vivi as he bids farewell to the party, reflecting on his legacy and the events of the game. The post is captioned with, “If you know, you know”, accompanied by a crying emoji.

An Imminent Announcement?

Rumours of a Final Fantasy 9 remake in the vein of the Final Fantasy 7 remake project have been swirling for years. The usually reliable leaker NateTheHate added fuel to the fire a couple of months ago by revealing that both the Final Fantasy 9 and Final Fantasy Tactics remakes remain in active development, but we are unlikely to see either released before the end of 2025.

Whether Square Enix is preparing to make an announcement, or is just playing with the hearts of fans, remains unknown. July 7 will mark 25 years since the original release of Final Fantasy 9. If the game isn’t ready for release, then this date would be a natural time for Square Enix to announce the game, which has reportedly been in development for several years.

Last year, a crossover event between Final Fantasy 14 and Final Fantasy 9 sparked hopes of an imminent announcement, a similar sentiment to how fans currently feel. However, Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida was quick to intervene and say that the crossover was not indicative of any remake announcement.

While fans were hopeful the Final Fantasy 9 remake was going to be announced at last week’s Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, these hopes turned out to be in vain. There was a particular opening frame in the trailer for the HD remaster of Bravely Default Flying Fairy that briefly sparked some joy in the hearts of Final Fantasy 9 fans, but this was quickly dashed as the trailer continued.

As it stands, fans are desperately waiting for an official announcement from Square Enix.
