Summary
- Schedule 1 is being investigated for potential copyright infringement against Drug Dealer Simulator.
- Drug Dealer Simulator’s publisher tells us that there is currently no lawsuit, and it bears no ill will towards the Schedule 1 devs.
- The publisher also stresses that the Drug Dealer Simulator devs have no involvement with the investigation.
Schedule 1 has taken Steam by storm after launching in early access late last month. As I write this, it’s the fifth most played game on Steam right now, wedged between Path of Exile 2 and Monster Hunter Wilds – not bad for an indie game.
However, developer TVGS has run into some issues amidst all of this success. Schedule 1 is currently being investigated for potential copyright infringement by Movie Games, the publisher of a different game, Drug Dealer Simulator. Now, Movie Games has commented on this move, explaining why the investigation was launched.
“There is no lawsuit. It is not our intention to prevent TVGS from selling or developing their game,” a representative of Movie Games told TheGamer, explaining that action will only be taken if infringement is found.
“There is an investigation into the nature of similarities between the games since a preliminary legal analysis indicated there might have been an infringement,” the representative continues. “The analysis and investigation were necessary in the light of repeating opinions that the games are very similar. By not investigating it, Movie Games, being a publicly traded company, could face severe consequences for negligence.
“There is no ill will towards TVGS. We even mailed them best wishes shortly before the release, when the game was already huge, but before the investigation was deemed necessary. However, we are obligated to perform this investigation.”
Movie Games stresses that Drug Dealer Simulators developer, Byterunners, did not launch the investigation and has no involvement with it.
This statement comes after Schedule 1 fans started to review bomb Drug Dealer Simulator and Drug Dealer Simulator 2 in response to the news of the investigation. Despite this, Schedule 1 is still perfectly available to pick up and play, and we don’t yet know if Movie Games will claim that copyright infringement took place. Until then, TVGS is not being sued, and both games are still on Steam.
