With sci-fi weaponry like Cyberpunk 2077, Titanfall-style wall running, and brutal FPS combat a la Doom, Metal Eden is shaping up to be a real treat. Revealed earlier this year, it’s a shooter I’ve been eager to try, especially with my Doom brain reactivated thanks to the upcoming launch of The Dark Ages. Well, now I can, and so can you, because Metal Eden has just dropped a Steam demo as it ramps up towards launch.
In this upcoming FPS game, you play as Aska, who’s tasked with saving the digitized souls of humanity that have been uploaded to machines called Cores. A sinister force known as the Engineers threaten to destroy the Cores, located on the planet Moebius, and in Metal Eden it’s your job to stop them and uncover their dark secrets.
While that’s a tall order, Aska is more than equipped for this mission. She is a highly advanced android that’s capable of dashing, wall running, and hovering to outmaneuver any threats she may face. She is also adept in the art of Core Ripping, which sounds both extremely cool and incredibly useful. The enemies she faces are powered by mini Cores, and once exposed, she can tear them off her foes and use them to her own advantage. You can consume a Core to boost your abilities, throw one like a grenade to clear out groups of enemies, or use one to deliver a devastating super punch. Yeah, I think I’ll be doing that last one a lot…

Of course, as a first-person shooter, Aska has a wide arsenal of weapons to choose from, which can be upgraded to increase their potency or transformed with Doom Eternal-style mods to give them a new dynamic. In the demo, which features the first two missions of Metal Eden, you’ll get access to three weapons: the Hertz AP auto pistol, which has unlimited ammo but can overheat if you’re too trigger-happy; the U9 Supra, a precision firearm that shoots heavy single-fire bullets; and the TAS-9 shotgun which is ideal for blasting away enemies at close range.
As well as launching the demo, developer Reikon Games is also hosting a speedrunning competition. Players can attempt to clear the demo as fast as possible, and the quickest times will get a cut of a $1,000 prize pool.
The Metal Eden demo is available to play right now on Steam, and it’ll remain live all the way through until the game’s release date on Tuesday, May 6. You can download it here.
