  • Actor Bella Ramsey finds complete darkness scarier than the infected on set.

So far, The Last of Us season 2 is off to a flying start as critics give the highly anticipated post-apocalyptic series’ return a promising review score. Even though there seem to be a few niggling factors for the upcoming season that suggest fans are not going to get a complete story this time around and a cliffhanger ending, with an overall score of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes so far, viewers should be in for a thrilling ride next week as they welcome back the beloved Joel and Ellie.

The Last of Us showrunner, Neil Druckmann, has already stated that season 2 of the series will be “Wild”, leaving fans to guess what horrors are included in the series that will be adapted from the gaming sequel. With clickers, stalkers, and bloaters, The Last of Us‘ world is already terrifying enough without needing to include savage cannibals and heartless gangs. Not only do Joel and Ellie have to worry about avoiding the many types of infected that will be shown more of this time around, but Bella Ramsey also opens up about what really scared them while taking on the role of Ellie, and it’s certainly not what most fans would expect them to say.

Talking to Yahoo Australia, Bella Ramsey was asked what the scariest moment of filming season 2 was for them. While many fans of the show would think that getting munched on by infected or getting gutted by the Seraphites might be towards the top of their list, it seems as though Ramsey’s scariest moment from the series was walking through a door and being in complete darkness. “Sometimes at the end of a scene, I go into a room and through a door, and often behind the door there is nothing there and there’s this darkness, no lights, no person. That’s like the scariest part.”

The interviewer replied by stating that they would have expected Bella to say that people in costume – meaning the clickers and different types of infected – would have been their creepiest moments while filming. However, Bella explained that they are actually the least scary people on set as they need help to drink water, eat, and navigate around, so, in reality, they are more vulnerable than terrifying. “They are actually quite comical to be around,” laughed Ramsey.

Ramsey also revealed a funny moment while filming season 2 of The Last of Us, which included a scene where Ellie and Dina (Isabella Merced) are eating cookies together, and, due to not wanting to eat too many of them because of numerous takes, they had a spit bucket, so in the middle of a scene, they had to spit out the cookies into the bucket. “It was pretty gross,” said Ramsey, jokingly.

The Last of Us Season 2 makes its premiere on HBO on April 13, 2025, and HBO’s The Last of Us podcast will begin on the same date after the series premiere at 9 pm EST on HBO and HBO Max, and continue to air at the same time each week throughout its seven episodes.
