Baldur’s Gate 3 is such a massive story, with so many options and winding paths, that some inconsistencies were always going to be inevitable. Thankfully, we have a massive amount of lore at our disposal, across Baldur’s Gate and Dungeons & Dragons, that helps us try and explain away some of the inconsistencies and keep us on our merry way.

He’s not the most persuasive demon.
One such inconsistency that fans recently noticed can be found in the Shadow-Cursed Lands, and is specifically tied to the poor “patient” under the “care” of Malus Thorm in the House of Healing. A Reddit user called Cosmic_Meditator777 pointed out that it is just theoretically impossible for Thorm’s patient to survive that deep into the Shadowlands, what with that whole Shadow Curse thing.
We know that stepping foot into the miasma will kill you pretty rapidly, unless you’re surrounded by light or have the blessings of Selune or the pixie. When you find Thorm’s patient in the House of Healing, he’s strapped to a table, potentially with his eyeballs and tongue cut out, and seemingly not blessed by anything. So, how is he even alive to begin with?
Baldur’s Gate 3 Fans Are Trying To Figure Out How Thorm’s Patient Survived The Shadowlands
In the replies to Cosmic_Meditator777’s post, that’s exactly what Baldur’s Gate 3 fans are trying to figure out. A user called Beneficial-Break1932 reckons it’s Lady Shar’s handiwork, as they think that because Thorm is a practicing Sharran, she allowed this one poor guy deep into the Shadowlands for research purposes. You also don’t see the guy again if you set him free, which means he likely dies as soon as he leaves the House of Healing.
Another user called MinnieShoof thinks that this poor guy could be someone who has lived in the Shadow-Cursed Lands ever since the curse appeared, and that he built a semi-tolerance to its effects, allowing him to survive in it for longer. I mean, he’s clearly not doing well when you find him, so maybe it is having an effect?
IsaacsLaughing thinks the patient was actually a Harper or Fist scout that got snatched up by Thorm and then dragged to the House of Healing with an escort. Notquitesolid follows that up with explaining that the shadows are actually living beings, and since Thorm has this poor guy already, then knew to stay away. We’ll never have a confirmed answer, but when these kinds of questions are asked, I always go to my default – a wizard did it.
