Nintendo has a long history with portable consoles, making real headway with the initial Game Boy. It was a resounding success despite being somewhat technically inferior compared to its peers, and that laid the groundwork for the much more technically impressive Game Boy Advance years later.

Nintendo’s inaugural handheld console was a smash hit. But just how many games did it get?

The style of many Game Boy Advance games still stand strong to this day, with vivid pixel art brought to life all on the go. Handheld consoles have always been Nintendo’s most successful consoles, but just how successful was the Game Boy Advance, and how large was its games library?

How Many Games Were Made For The Game Boy Advance?

The original Game Boy had a very long run, in comparison to both its contemporary peers, but also to modern consoles. To go past 7–8 years is an impressive feat, and is part of why the original Game Boy had such a large library of games, falling somewhere around 1,300 games. Which is what makes the Game Boy Advance even more impressive.

Despite being succeeded by the DS only three years on from its initial release, the Game Boy Advance surpassed the library size of the original Game Boy, ending somewhere around 1,500 games. Give or take a few. Even with the DS coming out so shortly into its lifespan, the Game Boy Advance kept up the releases for years, and wasn’t officially discontinued until 2010.

When Was The Last Game Released For The Game Boy Advance?

By the time of the Game Boy Advance, Nintendo’s console releases had started to sync up internationally more closely, with each region getting the Game Boy Advance at around the same time. Despite that, the final few games on the console had a more significant tail, trailing off in other regions long after others. So let’s take a more detailed view of the final game that released in each region below.

Final Game Released In Japan

The Game Boy Advance launched in Japan first, and ended there first, too. The very last game released for the console there was Final Fantasy Advance VI. This was a Game Boy Advance remake of the original SNES title, adding extra features that were not present in that version, though not all that were added in the Playstation version. It released on November 30th, 2006.

Final Game Released In Europe

Despite being the last major region in which the Game Boy Advance released, it was only the second region in which the console got its last game. This came in the form of The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night. While the game itself came out on quite a few consoles, it would also be the last release on many of those consoles, too. The game released on November 2nd, 2007.

Final Game Released In North America

The second region the Game Boy Advance launched in, but the very last region where the last official Game Boy Advance game was released, Samurai Deeper Kyo marked the last official release for the Game Boy Advance. Samurai Deeper Kyo originally launched in Japan on December 27th, 2002, but didn’t make its way to North America until February 12th, 2008, almost six years later.

Final ‘Game’ Released In Australia

While not strictly the last game in the region, it feels worth mentioning this all the same. The GlucoBoy was a peripheral made for the Game Boy Advance that was released only in Australia. It came with two games, Knock ’em Downs and Lost Star Saga, though this was far from its main point of attraction. The GlucoBoy was a blood glucose monitor designed to encourage good health in children.

It was released on November 14th, 2007 to coincide with World Diabetes Day, and sold a commendable enough number of units. It never saw release outside of Australia, though its successor, the Didget for the DS, came to the UK and US.

Aftermarket Releases

The Game Boy Advance also has a few games with a more unique release. Which is to say, they released a decade or so late. These would technically be the final games released for the console, though since they came after the official discontinuation and have no support from Nintendo, it’s fair to say they fall outside the norms. They said, they do stil lrun on all the original hardware, and some even have a Game Boy Advance Cartridge for sale.

Here are the games in question:

  • Kien – Released on June 14th, 2024 after a 22-year day from its original development.
  • Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution – Releases in 2025, after a 23-year delay.
  • Night Trap – Does not feature any of the gameplay of the original, released in 2024 after an April Fools 2023 reveal.

Night Trap excluded, these are all games that were actually in development for the original Game Boy Advance before being delayed. At least they finally get to see the light of day again.

What Were The Launch Titles For The Game Boy Advance?

The Game Boy Advance was following on from the major success of the original Game Boy, though unlike its predecessor, it didn’t have much by way of competitors. Despite the Game Boy Advance having the ability to be a runaway success, there was still quite a bit of effort put into its initial launch.

  • Japan – March 21st, 2001
  • North America – June 11th, 2001
  • Europe – June 22nd, 2001

Releasing with only a small delay between each region, the Game Boy Advance came packed with one of Nintendo’s strongest line-up of brand-new titles of any of their consoles. Let’s check them all out below.

In sharp contrast to many of Nintendo’s other console launches, the Game Boy Advance actually had the largest number of games at release in Japan, followed by North America, and then Europe. In Japan, the console launched with 25 games in total, with North America and Europe having 17 and 15 games respectively. This is still a strong launch across all regions, and the console came with a plethora of genres to choose from in that initial set of launch titles, too.
