Gold Rare Cards, Explained
Gold Rare cards, also known as Hyper Rare cards, were introduced in the Scarlet & Violet series sets. As the name suggests, these cards feature a gold-patterned background. Additionally, these cards are Full Art and Secret cards. They are also gilded holographic cards and have golden borders.
Each card in a series has a collection number, usually located in the bottom left or right corner of the card. A set contains a specific number of cards; for example, in a set of 120 cards, cards numbered 121 and beyond are considered Secret cards.
Gold Rare cards are not limited to Pokemon. They can also include energy, special energy, item, stadium, and Pokemon Tool cards. However, there are no Gold Rare versions of Support cards.
These gilded holographic cards feature an additional layer of glitter foil. Another distinguishing feature of these cards is their rarity symbol. To the right of the collection number, there are three gold stars that reflect the rarity symbol of the card. Two stars are below, and one star is above the others, forming a pyramid-like shape.
Pulling Hyper Rare cards is not easy, as they have very low pull rates. Therefore, if you’ve pulled a Gold Rare card, make sure to sleeve it properly to protect it. Additionally, because of their rarity, be cautious of fake Gold Rare cards and shop from trusted sellers.
Do not confuse Ultra Rare cards with Hyper Rares. Although Ultra Rare cards can be full art, they are not gold-coated and feature the ‘UR’ symbol instead of the three-star symbol. Hyper Rare cards are rarer and more valuable than Ultra Rare cards.
In the Black and White Collection expansions, Ultra Rare (UR) cards in Japanese Pokemon TCG can be considered roughly equivalent to Hyper Rare cards in English sets. However, there isn’t a complete overlap between the two.
While Japanese Ultra Rare cards are similar to Hyper Rare cards in English, earlier sets in English classified what are now called Hyper Rare cards as Secret Rare cards.
In Japanese sets, the UR symbol denotes Ultra Rare cards, but in English sets, Hyper Rare cards are rarer and more valuable than Ultra Rare ones. This distinction reflects how the rarity was handled differently in older English sets compared to newer ones.
