The Switch 2 Isn’t Expensive Because Of Trump’s Tariff’s, Says Nintendo

Nintendo Switch 2 Pre-Orders Will Begin On April 2 According To Best Buy

Summary

  • Nintendo Switch 2 price was not influenced by Trump’s tariffs, says Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser.
  • Instead, he says this is due to the new and improved features on the Switch 2.
  • However, pre-orders are still delayed in the US in response to the tariffs.

Last week, it was revealed that the Nintendo Switch 2 would cost $449.99, and fans were furious. Some blamed the price tag on the looming tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump, which have since come into effect. However, it doesn’t seem that this is the case.

Speaking with The Verge, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser has explained why the Switch 2 costs as much as it does. He was even asked outright if it was in preparation for Trump’s tariffs, but he denies this, saying that it is instead because of what the Switch 2 has to offer.

“Put [the April 2 tariff announcement] aside. Any previous tariffs were not factored into the price itself,” Bowser explains. “The news is fresh, and like many companies right now, we are actively assessing what the impact may be.”

Bowser then explains why Nintendo is charging so much more this time around, and simply put, it’s because the company feels that the Switch 2 has more to offer. Some of the features named as reasons for the price hike include the improved joy-cons, LCD screen, and the GameChat feature.

“We want to make sure that this is a device that is approachable, that consumers will see as part of their overall entertainment experiences and will understand that it has longevity to it,” he continues. “And all of those factors really go into the consideration of the price.”

Of course, we’ve already seen that Nintendo didn’t premptively deploy its plan to weather out the tariffs. The pre-order date for the Switch 2 was set for April 9, but this has been pushed back indefinitely in the US because of the tariffs. Nintendo’s stock prices have also taken a hit, alongside Sony‘s and Microsoft‘s. We’ll have to wait and see how this impacts pre-orders in the US, whenever they open, as no one would want a price hike on an already costly console.
