Summary
- The Last of Us Season 2 premieres this Sunday, and reviews are out now.
- The review confirms that the second season only adapts the first half of the game, The Last of Us Part 2.
- This has been met with mixed reviews, as some feel that the pacing suffers for it.
The Last of Us Season 2 reviews have dropped, and for the most part, it’s all looking fairly positive. Most importantly, however, the reviews finally answer a burning question we’ve all had since the first season aired: How the hell is it going to adapt the story of The Last of Us Part 2?
Well, we now have our answer – it’s splitting the game in half. Just as many of us suspected, Season 2 will not tell the full story of Part 2, and will cut off about halfway through the story, according to reviewers. I’ll be vague about what that cut off point is until we get further into the article, but from the sounds of it, it will be the same one from the game.
Spoilers for The Last of Us Part 2 (and likely The Last of Us Season 2) ahead.
The Last Of Us Season 2 Splits The Second Game’s Story In Two
The reviews that reference this split in the story appear to think it holds the season back in some regards. Tyler Taing from Discussing Film describes the story as “awkwardly paced”, with Simon Cardy from IGN saying that it’s “a little stop-start”. It seems that some feel that the split isn’t executed as well in the show as it is in the game.
So, what is this split? If you’ve come this far and don’t know already, I’m going to assume that you don’t mind being spoiled. Halfway through The Last of Us Part 2, you switch from playing as Ellie to playing as Abby. This unexpected twist encourages players to empathise with a character they’ve been hunting down for the entire story so far, with the fact that you’re actively playing as Abby literally makes you walk a mile in her shoes.
This split isn’t too surprising. Director Craig Mazin already said that he didn’t feel that Part 2’s story could be told in a single season, and he even suggested that it could take up to three seasons to flesh out. Considering that a third game isn’t coming anytime soon, that would at least let the show continue on a little longer.
In the time being, The Last of Us Season 2 starts on April 13, this Sunday.
