Summary
- A PlayStation Productions boss has revealed an Astro Bot adaptation is “absolutely” being considered.
- Nothing in development yet, but the studio’s new mascot will likely have more than a game one day.
- It will join God Of War, Helldivers 2, and Horizon Zero Dawn, all of which have adaptations in production.
The Last Of Us season two is less than a week away, and its success has got PlayStation eyeing up a lot of its IPs for potential adaptations. One of the only PlayStation flagships that doesn’t have a non-video game project in the works right now is Astro Bot, but that could change soon thanks to the critical success of 2024’s Game of the Year.
PlayStation Productions’ boss Asad Qizilbash revealed to Variety last week that even though an Astro Bot adaptation isn’t in the works right now, it has “absolutely” been considered for the TV show and movie treatment. “For us, it’s, ‘OK, we’ve established one of our franchises as a great game. It’s starting to get a built-in audience. It’s winning awards.’ Those are very early indicators for us to want to try and grow that franchise and grow that IP,” Qizlibash explained.

Astro Bot’s original ending upset its creators so much that the team decided to change it.
Astro certainly ticks at least one of those boxes. Not only did Astro Bot win Game of the Year at last year’s Game Awards, but it has continued to pick up accolades left and right since its release last September. Astro Bot has been awarded 110 GOTY awards so far according to the Game of the Year awards tracker, which is almost three times as many as Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth in second place.
Astro Bot Might Be Getting A Movie Or TV Show
Add It To The PlayStation Adaptation Pile
It remains unclear whether that built-in audience is there like it is for other PlayStation series that have been given the adaptation treatment such as Uncharted and The Last Of Us, though. PlayStation revealed that Astro Bot had sold 1.5 million copies just before the holidays. That number has likely sailed past two million mark since then, but it’s unclear how many copies the game would need to sell for PlayStation to consider it a success.
The Last Of Us has been the runaway hit for PlayStation which explains why it is trying to adapt as many of its games as possible. According to Variety, PlayStation has either turned or is in the process of turning ten of its games into movies or shows. Upcoming projects include Amazon’s God Of War, the Horizon Zero Dawn movie that was originally going to be a TV show, and a Helldivers 2 adaptation that we still know very little about.
PlayStation isn’t the only video game studio trying to adapt its games, of course. They’re all at it, and with A Minecraft Movie raking in $301 million during its first weekend, the video game adaptation market is only going to get busier in the coming months and years.
