The Minecraft movie, (full title A Minecraft Movie) is performing like gangbusters so far. The early returns suggest that villagers are more than willing to part with their precious emeralds to get a ticket to the movie. What has been the best-selling video game of all time has translated to the big screen and is performing quite well as one of the first true blockbusters of the year. It doesn’t hurt that there’s ample promotion, including a partnership with McDonald’s, but how well is it doing?

How Much Was the Minecraft Box Office?
At the box office over opening weekend, A Minecraft Movie has earned $157 million domestically (per CNN ). That means that the movie made its money back in the United States in one weekend alone. The budget was reportedly $150 million, so American moviegoers helped the movie hit diamonds in the mines and surpassed the budget in just a few days.
Initial analysis suggested the film would open to $60 million before readjusting to a $100 million estimate. The movie shattered those expectations and set records in the process. It’s easily the biggest opening weekend of the year, surpassing Snow White, Captain America: Brave New World, Mickey 17, and others.
It is also the biggest video game movie opening weekend of all time, which is high praise. The Super Mario Bros. movie made over $1 billion last year and the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has sold impressively well, too. Even Five Nights at Freddy’s didn’t open to such a reception.
According to CNN, this prompted a surge in the overall box office. Prior to the movie, the box office had been down 13% overall for 2025, and A Minecraft Movie has boosted that to only being down 5%.
Despite the overwhelming success, there does seem to be a divide among critics and fans. The movie’s average score on Letterboxd is 2.9, which is on the lower side out of five stars. It has a 6.1 score on IMDb. On Rotten Tomatoes, the critics gave it a positive review 47% of the time, while the audiences were kind to it 87% of the time.
The film stars Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Jennifer Coolidge, and more. It is directed by Jared Hess, perhaps best known for his work on Napoleon Dynamite. It’s still in theaters everywhere.
