Anyone who has followed Hollow Knight: Silksong‘s development knows just how agonizing the wait for the game has been. Despite being in the works for what feels like ages, the upcoming sequel to 2017’s Hollow Knight doesn’t have a release date yet or even a proper new gameplay trailer. To make matters worse, the three-person group of developers behind Hollow Knight: Silksong, Team Cherry, have been reluctant to share a smidge of new information on their upcoming game. The overall lack of communication from Team Cherry has sent the Hollow Knight community into a frenzy over the last few years.
Up until recently, many Hollow Knight fans were starting to lose hope in Team Cherry and Hollow Knight: Silksong‘s release. Some players unironically began to believe that Silksong was in development hell and had become nothing more than vaporware, much like Ubisoft’s Beyond Good & Evil 2. However, after the recent Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, the outlook surrounding the game’s release became a lot more positive. During a sizzle reel of upcoming third-party games at the event, Nintendo showcased a few seconds of Hollow Knight: Silksong gameplay footage and confirmed that it would come out in 2025. This news unsurprisingly took the internet by storm, and it became one of the most talked-about subjects of the Direct.

Hollow Knight: Silksong Has Had an Inconsistent Marketing Cycle
Team Cherry Shared a Lot of Information About Hollow Knight: Silksong in 2019
The fact that something as minor as a brief gameplay snippet was able to get the Hollow Knight fan base this riled up is a testament to how disorganized and inconsistent Silksong‘s marketing cycle has been so far. Indeed, looking back at the last 5 or so years, it seems unusual that it’s taken this long for Team Cherry to provide updates on the game. Hollow Knight: Silksong was initially announced for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Nintendo Switch on February 14, 2019, the same time as Valentine’s Day. Team Cherry dropped a reveal trailer for the game, alongside a 20-minute developer deep dive video, on its official YouTube channel that day.
Unlike subsequent years, the remainder of 2019 was packed with Silksong-related news. Roughly 33 days after it was first revealed, Team Cherry shared some additional information about Silksong‘s characters in a blog post on March 19. Then, just 86 days later, the game showed up during a Nintendo Treehouse presentation at E3 2019, the second-to-last E3 ever held. Hollow Knight: Silksong received an extensive deep dive presentation during the event, which showcased its opening cutscene and even its first boss fight. To cap the year off, Team Cherry provided yet another development update on Hollow Knight: Silksong on December 13, 2019 (183 days after E3 2019), detailing some new enemies and sharing a sample of the game’s soundtrack.

Hollow Knight: Silksong Was Scheduled to Launch in 2023, But It Was Delayed
After 2019 came to a close, Team Cherry went almost completely silent on Hollow Knight: Silksong in the ensuing months. The studio didn’t share a lot of information about the game (though it did reveal some details in Edge Magazine Issue #354) until the June 2022 Xbox Games Showcase, which took place several years later. At Xbox’s presentation, Team Cherry dropped the second trailer for Silksong. The company confirmed that it would not only be released on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S, but that it would also launch on Xbox Game Pass on day one. At the time, Team Cherry and Microsoft claimed that Silksong would be released sometime in the first half of 2023, though that never came to pass.
As the days went by, very little news about Hollow Knight: Silksong popped up, outside of a brief PlayStation port announcement in September 2022. Eventually, though, on May 10, 2023, a representative from Team Cherry confirmed that the game would be delayed to an unspecified date, beyond its planned 2023 release window. Aside from a few minor updates, that was the last time Team Cherry provided any substantial details on Silksong‘s development; that is, until the recent Nintendo Switch 2 Direct. Since Hollow Knight: Silksong is currently slated to launch across all platforms in 2025, however, fans will hopefully not have to wait too long for another update on the game.
