How Does Whiteflame Torrent Work in Monster Hunter Wilds?



Many of the equipment skills in Monster Hunter Wilds seem simple at first glance, but more often than not, they’re usually more complicated than what players assume. Whiteflame Torrent is the newest addition to the latter category of skills — it’s pretty simple on paper, but there are things about it that the game doesn’t tell anyone.

If you’ve just finished farming High Rank Zoh Shia in MH Wilds for your preferred weapon, you’ll want to know how Whiteflame Torrent works and how it actually helps you out during a fight. This guide includes notes on how this weapon skill works based on our testing as well as other observations made by the Monster Hunter community.

MH Wilds: Whiteflame Torrent, Explained

Whiteflame Torrent in MH Wilds

According to its in-game tooltip, Whiteflame Torrent gives your weapon a chance to deal additional damage when attacking. When using this skill, hitting anything with your weapon will occasionally cause a burst of 50 True Damage, which means it will always deal 50 damage regardless of monster weaknesses and hit zones.

This is where things get tricky. Whiteflame Torrent’s trigger rate is more complicated than players think. Based on testing conducted by several players across the MH Wilds community, this skill has the following properties:

  1. Whiteflame Torrent has an internal cooldown of approximately three seconds since its last activation.
  2. The skill has an approximate activation chance of 33%.
  3. Some attacks are completely unable to trigger Whiteflame Torrent.

Whiteflame Torrent is horrible with Dual Blades and Gunlances, as it cannot be triggered by the latter two’s strongest attacks (Demon Flurry/Blade Dance and Multi Wyrmstake Full Blast).

Based on our own testing using the Zoh Shia Long Sword against the Training Area’s dummy, we’ve observed the following:

  • Triangle/Y and Circle/B attacks have a 1-in-3 chance of activating Whiteflame Torrent. After some time, this chance decreases to 1-in-5 and eventually, 1-in-9.
  • Crimson Slash moves from when the Long Sword’s gauge is red seem to have a lower chance of activating Whiteflame Torrent.

Scorcher Set Bonus Synergy

Whiteflame Torrent works with the Scorcer bonus from the Rathalos and Guardian Rathalos armor sets. However, instead of improving the activation chance or having both skills trigger separately, these two will merge together.

When used with Scorcher, Whiteflame Torrent will deal both True damage and Fire damage. The latter portion of it will be subject to monster weaknesses and hit zones, but the former will still deal full damage regardless of what or where it hits, albeit with a slight reduction to its damage.

Recommendations

Considering how Zoh Shia weapons have low elemental attack values, players can expect them to deal less damage per-hit compared to Arkveld, Gore Magala, or even Artian weapons. However, since they have Whiteflame Torrent, their overall performance will still be comparable in terms of total damage output.

Since Whiteflame Torrent bursts deal True damage, Zoh Shia weapons are ultimately more forgiving compared to everything else in the game so far. Players should still try to hit weakspots, but in those situations where they have no choice but to hit tough monster parts, Whiteflame Torrent is there to bump their damage up.

However, since Whiteflame Torrent has chance-based procs and its weapons deal lower damage per-hit compared to others, we do not recommend using this skill and the Zoh Shia weapons for speedrunning. In those cases, you’re better off using weapons with stronger base stats or decoration slots.
