I’d wager that when you think of a soulslike, a fantasy medieval setting comes to mind – clashing steel, mythical creatures, and giant gothic-inspired castles are what I think of, that’s for sure. But ever since FromSoftware birthed an entire genre with Demon’s and Dark Souls, there have been plenty of developers taking soulslikes to new places. Back in 2023 Gunfire Games did just that with Remnant 2, and now you can grab it on Steam for the cheapest it’s ever been.
As is often the case in fiction, the world has gone down the tubes. Dead creatures and god-like bosses roam the land, and the surface has been terraformed into a hellscape. Tree-like aliens called The Root have invaded, and it’s up to you and some friends to stop them. Remnant 2 hands you a swathe of firearms, melee weapons, and fantastical abilities to help you eliminate The Root, and it’s all wrapped up with a soulslike bow.
Despite the shift in design, if you’ve played Dark Souls, Elden Ring, or the rest of FromSoftware’s oeuvre, you’ll be familiar with Remnant 2. Enemies have tough but choreographed attacks, there’s a tense challenge, and the trusty dodge roll is key to your survival.
You can play solo or with up to two friends, with plenty of gear and weapons to make each of you stand out. The first game’s Archetype system, its interpretation of RPG classes, has also been expanded, so whether you want to hit hard, move fast, support your team, or sling your guns, the choice is yours.
