When Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended in 2003, the series finale was fairly vague and mysterious and not exactly a concrete and obvious happy ending. Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and her friends were finished with an epic battle, but their fate was up in the air. That’s why fans have been so curious about whether Buffy would get a reboot. A few months ago, fans heard the good news that Buffy is coming back, and many hope for cameos or major appearances from popular characters such as Anya Jenkins (Emma Caulfield).
A little while ago, a major star gave an update about the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, and it turns out that they were also a producer on seasons 1 through 7 of the WB drama.

The Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival will introduce new characters, but could an OG cast member come back?
In January 2024, Dolly Parton talked about the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot in an interview with Business Insider, and the publication mentioned that she was a producer on the original series. Parton’s company Sandollar Productions also co-produced the 1992 movie that came before the TV series along with Kuzui Enterprises. Parton said:
“They’re still working on that. They’re thinking about bringing it back and revamping it.”
At that time, fans weren’t sure that the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot was still happening. In 2018, Deadline reported that Fox 21 TV Studios was developing a reboot that would feature a Black actress in the main role. Then, in February 2025, Sarah Michelle Gellar shared the thrilling news that a reboot almost had a pilot order at Hulu.
Fans who have been discussing the WB drama’s plot twists, big reveals, and character development ever since Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 1 aired in 1997 might not have known about Parton being a producer. Sarah Michelle Gellar mentioned the legendary country music singer when she appeared on The Late Show with Jimmy Fallon in 2023 and said Parton was an uncredited producer. Gellar explained:
“We never saw her [but] we’d get Christmas gifts in the beginning that would have our name, and I would think, ‘She doesn’t even know who I am.’ And then one day, someone asked her about it, and she complimented the show and my performance. I was like, ‘Oh, I can die now. Dolly Parton knows who I am and thinks I’m good.’”
While fans are waiting for an official plot description of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, Daniel Richtman recently shared casting details including the news that Buffy Summers will be working with a new slayer named Nova. This is great to hear since it sounds like the reboot will feature plenty of nostalgia for Buffy Summers along with new characters viewers can become invested in. The reboot would be disappointing without Buffy’s return as her confidence and sharp sense of humor elevate every scene she’s in. However, viewers are still wondering if original characters like Rupert Giles (Anthony Head) will come back.
