Did you know that Bungie has been running an ARG (alternate reality game) that had many in the community working together to unlock… the gameplay reveal date of Marathon? I certainly didn’t, but that’s neither here nor there.
The important news is that Bungie is finally ready to show off Marathon gameplay – for the first time – this Saturday in a livestream.
This announcement follows on from a series of really strange teasers that consisted of some headache-inducing moving graphics, constantly shifting shapes and weird phrases you can barely make out.
We’re all very happy we won’t have to deal with that much longer to see, well, anything of Bungie’s often delayed, reportedly troubled extraction shooter. This Saturday, April 12 at 10am PT, 1pm ET, 6pm UK, 7pm CEST the developer is hosting a livestream on the game’s Twitch channel to reveal Marathon gameplay for the first time, offer some updates on development, and hopefully deliver some news-worthy announcements.
The beleaguered studio is currently living its arguably worst era, with Destiny continuing its downturn, and the community losing hope in the game (and the studio’s) future.
Bungie has long hoped that Marathon would define its next era, and bring the storied developer back into prominence. Outside of some brief teasers, however, Bungie hasn’t produced anything worth getting excited about. The game was originally set to launch last year, before it got pushed back to 2025. It’s supposedly still on track for release this year, so hopefully Saturday’s stream will deliver a solid release date.
Marathon was announced in 2023 as a multiplayer only, team-based extraction shooter. The game changed direction after its original director was let go, and though it retained extraction shooter elements, it also now incorporates hero/character-based mechanics.
Bungie has a real shot at showing us how it’s going to make that concoction of ideas work, but it’s difficult to get excited about the game right now, especially in a market already full of different takes on extraction shooters.
